 India - internal flights

Hey everyone,

I've just found out I've got a place on the Study India scheme so I'll be off to Delhi for three weeks in August, which I'm ridiculously excited about.

I need to have proof of my flights by the 17th July though or I lose my place ... so I have been hunting around for cheap deals and Dialaflight quoted me £329 return (London-Mumbai, Delhi-London). First question: does this price sound reasonable? I think it's with Jet Airways; are they okay?

Secondly, I have vague plans to fly in a bit earlier than the scheme starts, and visit Children Walking Tall, the charity in Goa that I volunteered at two years ago. It's really the internal flights that are confusing me; I got quite a few internal flights last times I was away but I can't remember how I went about it so I need some help! Am I able to book them myself now, using a UK credit/debit card? I have a feeling that some flight companies don't accept this. Also, how much should I be expecting to pay for the two internal flights (Mumbai-Goa, Goa-Delhi)? When I mentioned this to the guy at Dialaflight he supposedly added these flights on to the quote and then the price shot up to £468, which seemed slightly pricey ... or am I just being cheap? Should I book them myself or let Dialaflight organise the whole thing (I think I know what the answer's going to be but it'll be reasurring to hear it!).

Thanks a lot ...

Amber.

Hey
I'm sure you're going to have a good experience in India!
£329 is very very good for a return ticket.. especially with Jet airways, which is probably the best if you're going to india or from india. In a way it's too good to be true because the flight prices are usually really high in Aug, December and other holidays. I go to India once every year or so and if you're going in Aug or sometime during the holidays you usually pay atleast 450 for a direct flight with a good airline. i went in november with jet airways last year .. november so not a holiday time and even then i paid 400! so ... just be sure you're getting the right ticket. usually including direct and indirect flights it can vary from 380 - .. let's just say nearing a thousand quid!
southall travels is alright if you want to look for a flight. google southall travels.
about the uk card working there.. i tried last year, but i had a solo debit card then and it didn't work. I'd imagine a normal debit should work. credit should definitely work. you can cross check with your bank people.
internal flights.. have become expensive in india but for the indians earning in rupees. for you it shouldn't be that expensive and it should definitely not be 468!
i would just say that you can buy a ticket when you reach india.. it's easier and more convenient. i'm sure you'd get a ticket. not a lot of people use internal flights.
i would say organise the whole thing on your own.. if you're confident enough because then you learn a lot from your mistakes as well. just keep one thing in mind - there are a lot of nice people in india, but like in any other country there are a fair number who're just waiting to fool others as well. so don't accept anything from any outsider, try to stay in fairly crowded areas.. don't end up going in alleys and small streets at night just to take a short cut... and try to enjoy your time.
i'm not trying to be stereotypical here (mind you i was born in india and lived there for 14 years) but if someone knows their english well and i mean gramatically well (and not the accent) that pretty much means they should be trust worthy and that they're educated. you do exceptions though :P
i've confused myself now..
but feel free to ask me anything else if you want to.
sorry for the late reply

Haha thanks ... yes I think I'm going to organise the internal flights myself; I did this last time and it was fine (although I booked whilst in India rather than from home). Just being a bit cautious really! And it's good to know my card will probably work booking online from the UK ...

You might want to try the following sites for booking your internal flights -

www.cleartrip.com
www.makemytrip.com
www.yatra.com

all the above sites, give you the best prices. Dont go to any travel agent to book airtickets, they will charge u something extra. Book directly through these sites & they are quite safe as well.

Incase you are taking a stop in Mumbai, do go through the link below which talks about things you can do while you are in Mumbai. Hope this helps.
