 India route - clueless!!

Hi I want to spend about 3 weeks in India in December and have no idea where to go. All I know is that I am flying into Mumbai and that i'm not really interested in Delhi cause it sounds too hectic, I want to chill at the end of my rtw. I know I want to go to Goa and that I can fly out from any major airport in Southern India.

Can someone pls suggest a nice route for me to backpack? December is chilly in northern India so I guess southern would be nicer. Is there a 'typical' india backpackers route? Thanks!

If you only have three weeks I would suggest catching a train from Mumbai to Margao (main station in Goa) then you can catch a bus from the bus stand to Canacona station. From Canacona get a rickshaw to Palolem or Agonda. Use either of them as a base to do a few day trips around Goa.

You might find it difficult to leave once you settle on one of the southern beaches but if you still have the energy you could go to Hampi for a few days. If you want get away from the crowds but still chill on a beach then head to Gokarna in Karnataka. You can get the train from Canacona to Gokarna then grab a rickshaw to Om beach.

If you have time it would be worth while weeing Kerala too. You can get an overnight train to to Cochin or further south if you want. Then get a slow boat through the backwaters towards Varkala which would be a nice place to spend your last few days. You can fly out of Trivandrum city airport which is only a bus ride from Varkala(45km).

Have you had a look in the lonley planet or on the website they have suggested iteniraries. I went for 6 weeks and ended up going up and down on the train loads which was really fun but not really necessary. Kerala is really nice. Stay away from Bagga beach and the one below that Calangute in December unless you don't mind being hasseled GALORE. It seems all the Indians from Mumbai holiday In Goa for chirstmas. Are you travelling alone? or with friends? Palolem sounds nice i wish i had gone there but at least I had an experience on calagute! Deli will be freezing arounds this time as you know best take some warm clothes if you head that way. Cheers
