hi
im starting my travels around india and nepal in a couple weeks and cant decide if its worth getting a lock for my bag as its just a draw string rucksack with buckles. Everyone seems to say that you need bag locks on the indian trains but i dont really see the point, if someone wanted to get in the bag they could easily rip or cut into it?! Just wanted to get peoples opinions and see if anyone had any advice?
thanks
matt

I haven't been to India, but...

Bag security is never great - it's a matter of not being the easiest target, rather than being impregnable. It's more of a commitment to cut a bag with a knife (and you'll notice sooner), than just having a rifle through an unlocked bag.

You can get lots for the buckles for top-loading rucksacks. Using some sort of additional cover/generally making it more difficult to access will help.

A lockable bag can be useful in India as you won't be able to store your bag at train stations etc without it being lockable

For example if you got the overnight train to Agra and don't want to stay the night but just see the Taj / Fort etc before moving on the same day, it may be useful to leave your bagage at the station

Best just getting a bag to cover it with one zip and lock that

My rucksack is the same, just a drawstring at the top. It's impossible to lock! I wouldn't bother even trying; just make sure there's nothing of any value in it and keep your passport etc. in a day bag that you don't let out of your sight. To be honest rucksacks aren't very secure anyway so even if you managed to lock it somehow, if anyone were that desperate they could just slice it open.

I never had anything stolen in India with my non-lockable rucksack.

Bag locks are handy for the trains, more to stop someone wandering off with the whole thing while you're sleeping, and like someone above said, you normally can't leave your pack at a left luggage place without there being some sort of lock on it.

if you want to be safe there are these wire mesh things that cover your whole rucksack and can padlock it. stops people cutting into your bag and you can get them on ebay i think

Pacsafes, which is what Karriella is talking about scream 'come mug me, I have lots of valuables in my pack', they weigh over 1kg and cost a fortune. Definitely not worth buying.

Put your rucksack inside a large holdall and lock the zips together if your pack doesn't lock, or buy a travelpack which locks securely.

My advice would be to buy a chap padlock. at te end of the day if someone really wants to get into your bag, they will, but at te same time they will also go for the easest targets and if you have a small lock on there it will hopefully put off potential theives!

I took a drawstring top backpack to india with a buckle flap, but it also had a botom zip compartment. I always kept my passport and money on me, but still stuck a padlock on the bottom zip compartment. I had a problem but it gave me peace of mind. I also picked up a cheap chain when i was there so i could padlock my bag to the train on overnight journeys. Again never had a problem but i slept a bit easier and in my opinion thats priceless!
