 Hurricanes

I'm thinking about going to the Caribbean this August/September, probably Cuba, but am worried that it's the height of the hurricane season. Does anyone know what the odds are, is this a place that is likely to be badly hit, would we end up regretting ever going? I just want to get an idea about whether it's a stupid thing to consider or if it's worth going anyway and just hoping for good weather? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks its nice to have some encouragement. I didn't want to put us in real danger but Cuba's supposed to be relatively well prepared and apparently has good coping strategies so I think we're going to go and just keep an eye on reports, listen to the locals etc. Very excited, it feels so good to be making a decision at last!

i went to the dominican republic during hurricane season and we got the tailend of a hurricane that hit cuba. it wasnt that bad for us bit of wind which was nice cos it was so hot and quite a bit of rain!

dont want to put you off but 20 people died in cuba during that hurricane.

edited to add that no tourists died just the locals who were probably too poor to have adequate housing. they just have houses made from bits of metal

Sarahq is right, it is mostly the locals who die due to poor-quality housing that can't always withstand hurricanes. Most places have shelters should things get bad, and many smaller islands have plans in place to get people out, should they be expecting very bad weather. Usually the worst is heavy rain.

I'd say go, but ask your travel company beforehand what their hurricane policy is, and if they're of the 'sort yourself out' camp, think twice before going.

I'm hopefully going to Cuba in Sept...hey Lib Lob, you still planning to go? Have you booked it yet?

Seems you will definitely be safe. They are used to it, so are prepared. Also warning system is v. good, so you aren't gonna be taken by surprise.
Again, Sarahq is correct. The number of locals that die is also very small (don't mean to diminish the tragedy, just get things in perspective).

Ask yourself:

a. Is hurricane going to hit when you are there - remember it lasts only a few days max., and could be any time from late Aug to mid Oct. Statistical peak is 10th Sept, which is when I want to go, and I have very little flexibility on dates

b. If it does, how bad is it? Could be just rain and winds, If that's going to ruin your trip, don't go. If you can live with it, go for it.

Guess I'll take a good book and some good tunes in case I get stuck indoors due to weather. Oh and a rain mac (stylish ) and suitable shoes/ clothes or ones that I don't mind getting ruined...Remember it is the rainy season, as anyone who has been anywhere tropical in the rainy season knows, that means MUD (although I haven't been to the Carribean, thinking SE Asia, maybe Cuba is cleaner, I have no idea.)
It's not usually a big deal, it's not like it's all the time. Sometimes you can predict what time the deluge arrives and be safely indoors. And hey, it's like a shower, and can be quite refreshing in the heat

i have been to several places in the caribbean and always in hurricance season. twice i've been on the tail end of a hurricane and it was just a bit stormy and grey. but didn't really affect us that much. only really affects your sunbathing. i'd say take a rain mac and be brave.

also my mum was actually in a hurricane and she survived. ironic really because my grandparents named her after the hurricane that forced them to leave jamaica and move over here. just remember thousands of people live in the caribbean and put up with hurricanes on a regular basis. chances are you won't encounter one, but if you do it's probably not the end of the world. and the experience will be so amazing it's probably worth the risk.
