Myself and my boyfriend are starting our 5 months travelling in Rio. We're going on an Oasis Overland tour from Rio to Santiago leaving on the 18th Feb 2010. The accomodation recommended by Oasis is the above hotel, the tour also leaves from here so would be handy (http://www.arcosriopalacehotel.com.br/). We'll be getting into Rio on the 9th Feb which means 9 nights accomodation needed. I looked around myself and this works out pretty expensive being carnival. For the 9 nights we could stay in the Arcos for c. €400 each. The hotel also has a pool. Lapa as an area seems to get fairly mixed reviews as somewhere to stay so thats whats holding me back. I've travelled a fair bit and we'd have our wits about us but would we be better somewhere else?not sure I'm pushed on a hostel as we'll be roughing it for nearly 2 months after that so wouldn't mind starting in a hotel. I've seen a fair few posts about buses and metro to beaches...if this was possible and safe it would be an advantage. I have emailed a few apartment companies but don't seem any cheaper, most dearer and wouldn't have a pool so only advantage would be location....is that enough?
Apologies for length of post. Any advice would be great.
