 Travelling in South America

Hi. i'm doing a RTW trip, starting in Asia, then Oz/NZ, then over to S.America.

I've done a fair bit of research and planning for the Asia part, and i think Oz & NZ will just fall into place (not there that long anyway) however i'm looking for a bit of advice re S America as i havent got much of a clue as yet.

I fly into Santiago at the start of March, and fly out of Lima around 3 months later, give or take.

Just wondering what people would recommend re balance of countries / time spent etc.

I'm thinking say a few days in Santiago/Chile (should i stay longer?) then 2 or 3 weeks in Argentina (not really bothered about going right down south, but perhaps i should be?) then say 3 weeks in Brazil (altho it can be expensive right?) then say a week in bolivia (not really sure what to do there apart from see the salt plains but anyway...) then another week in Peru / Inca Trail..

how does that sound?

I think adding up what i got so far is less than the 3 months i could have there, so perhaps ecuador and/or colombia are worth a shot too?

thanks

Hi James,

You could easily spend a month in Chile itself, although it is slightly more expensive than many other South American countries.

The distances in South America a big and the bus journey's can be long. I'd recommend spending a decent amount of time in each country (a month in each). I don't think you should try and rush to see everything you can because it'll change the travel experience. Instead of taking your time and having a degree of freedom you'll feel more stressed having to plan in more detail to fit everything in.

Chile has a lot to offer and shouldn't be overlooked, especially the north. 3 weeks in Brazil also isn't a massive amount of time. I know many people who've spent longer than a year in South America alone traveling around. I recommend not trying to fit it all in one trip.

It might be worth thinking about doing some of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru and leaving Brazil for another trip.

Just my thoughts, but everyone is different.

Whatever you choose to do have a great time!

Thanks,

I agree with travel monkey, don't try to cover too much. There are normally very comfortable buses on most routes (business class style seats) but the journeys can still be 30-40 hours, you could end up spending half your entire trip sat on your arse!

Patagonia (in Chile and Argentina) is just beautiful and if you enjoy a bit of trekking, it's a very good option. It is one of the more expensive areas to travel through though, and it's probably not worth going down there unless you're happy to dedicate at least a week or 2 down there. Bolivia gives you more for your money, and it's an incredible country, slightly more rugged though.

If you go to Cuzco, go to the Fallen Angel restaurant. Not a cultural South American experience at all, but the nicest steaks you will ever find!

Enjoy!

I didnt like chile at all, i went and was back in argentina within a week! heard the north is better so maybe i should have tried going up there but around the centre area is pretty rubbish i found argentina so much nicer, friendlier and cheaper so went back!

You could easily spend so much time in the other countries, bolivia was my favorite, so different and so much to see and i loved argentinian patagonia
