I disagree. A travel guide is a wicked tool when travelling in South America.
Chances are, you'll be travelling long distances on buses, and if you arrive somewhere at midnight and need to find a place to crash for the night, it's handy to flick through your guide book, find somewhere, and head there straight away. Imagine hunting for an internet cafe in backwater Bolivia at midnight... no thanks.
The Shoestring guide is a good one. Yes, certain things will be out of date, but on the whole it was totally one of the best things I had in my pack when I was out there. |
