Hi there,

I havnt been to south america but I would really love to go and I found a really good website called www.rickanddolly.com . Its this couple that spent 8 months travelling all over south america and they tell you what itinery they used and all sorts. Even though its not a proper info website, (its more like a giant blog!), I found it really usefull and its was nice to read through all their adventures as they experienced them as opposed to facts and figures like alot of websites seem to give.

Give it a go!! Good luck!

I spent 5 months in South/Central America in early 2008 and had a amazing time. Your route would depend on how much time you've got but I reckon to see most things you could do something like this:

Brazil - Argentina - Chile - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador - Colombia - Panama - Costa Rica - Nicaragua - Honduras - Guatemala - Belize - Mexico.

There's a pretty good backpacker route over there so you should be able to find people going your way. From Buenos Aires you can also pop over into Uruguay and from Santiago if you have the money you should definitely go to Easter Island.

I didn't quite manage to fit in everything I wanted to do in 5 months but I got a good feel for the place. If you want to read more my blog is at

With getting around it's very easy to do by bus. Obviously, depending on where you are they are of different quality (Argentina's are amazing, Bolivia's not so much!) but you can nearly always find a bus going where you want to.

Hey,

I am going to do the Americas this summer. I am also doing a similar route to the one described above, I have a flight from London to Bogota (Colombia) then a connection to Cartagena, from there im getting a boat to Panama then buses up through Central America into Mexcio then i have a flight from Mexico City to LA.

I am going onto NZ Oz and Asia after that but my entire set of flights were only 2K, I am going to try and do mostly land traveling once i get to South America but i know the internal flights are really cheap as i looked into them... your talking 100-150 for Colombia to Panama, but the buses are so cheap in Central America you would eb a fool to fly unless your in a hurry.

I flew in from Oz and had a different route in mind to begin with so I had flights booked from Sydney - Easter Island, Easter Island - Rio, Peru - Mexico City and Mexico City - London. In the end I didn't use the Peru - Mexico City flight. You don't really need internal flights as there are buses everywhere. The oly place you may want to consider one is between Colombia and Panama. You cannot go overland on this route as it's a very dodgy area so you either have to fly or go on a boat.

As for money I can't for the life of me remember how much I spent. Brazil at New Year was very expensive. Chile was quite pricey. Bolivia and Ecuador were very cheap. In Central America Costa Rica is one of the more expensive places but everywhere else was really cheap. I reckon for 5 months I probably didn't spend more than £3000 and at times I did treat myself. If you need to do things on the real cheap you can get 3 course lunches for $1.50 - just look for signs saying 'Menu Del Dia'. You can also stay in guesthouses for a couple of dollars a night rather than the Western run hostels which will set you back a few dollars more.

Hey Randy, me and a few friends are doing a similar route, we are hitting the San Blas islands too on the way to Panama from Colombia, they look amazing! there is a yacht trips that if you shop around you can apparently get for pretty cheap that take you to and from Colombia via the San Blas islands.
