Honduras has a few Caribbean islands, the biggest one being Roatan. I've been there and can vouch that it is truly amazing! Really good reefs for snorkelling/diving, full of wildlife, beautiful beaches, you can go swimming with dolphins, hire a moped and zip around the island your self, it's just lovely and chilled!
To get there, go to La Cebia on the north coast of Honduras and catch the Galaxy Wave ferry out to Roatan. The journey takes about a bit over an hour... though I fell asleep on it both going out there and coming back so I could be wrong, but it was about that ;) It's more reliable than the planes which can take you across as these often get canceled due to low passenger numbers! It's like an airport, you have to check your backpacks in and get them at the other end, you go through security etc. and it was interesting to watch 2 men being handed back a couple of guns at the end of their trip! I believe it leaves 2 times a day, one in the morning at something like 8.00 (and I had travelled from Tela that morning to get to the port on time hence me falling asleep) and the other in the afternoon. The fares were very odd, more expensive to go there than it was to come back, but it was around the 500 lempira mark $25-30 something like that!
If you're wanting to know how much it costs to get to some of the more well known islands such as the Dominican Republic, Jamacia etc. I'm afraid I'm not too sure as I've never gone to any other island from any of the mainland countries... though I can almost guarantee it wont be as cheap as the ferry to Roatan! |
