PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 8:15 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hello,

My husband & I are travelling around SE Asia for 14 weeks and are looking into vaccinations. We have been told that we need:

Hep A
Typhoid
Rabies
Jap B Encephalitis

as well as anti-malaria.

We're going to Malaysia, Thailand (mainly the islands), Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Do you think all these are necesary? I'm not sure if we can afford all of them!

its defo a wise idea to get them you never know what may happen, there is a clinic in london i am told that can do the rabies jab for £17.50 each way.
Not sure about the Jap B, i just had my Tyhphoid and Hep A but i had the combined one and this cost me £4.

Depending on where you live you should b able 2 get typhoid and hep a on the nhs for free. Ashleigh mentioned 1st contact clinic in London which does Rabies for 17.50 which is good, but don't forget 2 take transport costs into account too!!

I am going to SE Asia and read that I should get Jap Enciphilitis but decided against and was told at the clinic that it really isn't necessary. It is a dangerous vaccination (have heard you need to remain near medical help 10 days after jab!!!!) and chances of getting it badly are very low. The decision is yours though!

If you are gettin malaria tabs go to travelpharm.com. I was advised to used this website by other people on here. I was weary incase it wasn't legitimate but I have checked the legitimacy with the National Pharmaceutical Association. They sell tabs for very cheap, doxycycline was originally going to cost me over 100 quid, with travelpharm.com it's about 25!

Hope this helps x

i am also going to s.e asia, and have an appointment with the travel nurse at my local GP for next week. thats the standard list i was going to ask about too..the rabies for £17.50 sounds great, as i did hear the entire list was going to cost something like £200?! and the malaria tablets, apparently they send you absolutely loopy. like imagining you have bows and arrows and are that witch from the wizard of oz kind of loopy. apparently!

Thanks for that advice. That sounds a very good deal. Are these 3 jobs a one-off or do you need them over a certain time period? If it's a one-off, it would be worth travelling to London (I'm in the South West at the moment).

If you're looking to get the hep B vaccine it usually costs £129 I think or more. However, if you're happy for them to put on your medical records that you have had or intend to have more than one sexual partner, this classifies you as 'high risk' and you can get it for free on the NHS.

Does anyone know what a good price is for a Rabies Vaccination? I know you can get it done at BA travels clinics for £17.50 but this is an intra-dermal injection as opposed to a muscular one which works a lot better so I am told.

The cheap rabies jabs only last 1 year, which is fine if you are only going to rabies areas for that amount of time. The course I had is day 0, 7 and 21 so that would be a lot of travelling!

hi guys im travelling to kenya in january but then asia in march and the jabs im having are:
hep a and b combined which ive had the first one, need another top up in a month and then 6 months and then im totally covered (this was free)
typhoid (free)
im covered with polio/diptheria/tetanus
just need malaria tablets now and yellow fever for kenya
im not getting the rabies jab-no point it just means that instead of the usual limit of 24 hours to get to a hospital you get this increased to 48 hrs. not much point and the liklyhood of needing the jab b is so slim theres not much point.

i had my first appointment at the doctors yesterday! i wasn't expecting to get anything straight away but the nurse was nice and so i got D, P & T and hep a/b.
i have to go back next week for the next set of hep a/b and typhiod, then in a months time for the last set of hep a/b and then rabies.
rabies is the only one i have to pay for.
i'm unsure whether to get jap. en. as she didn't know if it was essiential..i don't know what to do?
