For those who have done it before how do you sort a bank account and a tax file number when you have no residential address? Cheers |

When you apply for you TFN they'll ask for a residential address - at this point the assistant will give you the post office address, which your TFN will be sent to. Its provided for backackers, so no worries. Cant help with opening a back account, as havent got round to doing that yet! Louise |

| I got my TFN sent to Wake Up, it arrived after I'd left the hostel but they hold your mail for 3-4 weeks, so I just popped in regularly to check if they had it. As for the bank account I set one up with Citibank before I left, through travellers contact point website, then picked up the card when I arrived in Sydney. They send you monthly statements by email so you don't need to have an address. I don't really recommend Citibank as I was in the country for 11 months and visited quite a few places and only found one Citibank cash machine and they charge you to use another banks machine so it works out quite expensively, I know that other banks such as Westpac let you open accounts when you get there, not quite sure how they work though. | |

| For the TFN i just filled out the form online a week before i was due at a hostel i'd booked for 2 weeks, and it arrived on the 4th day of my stay.
For the bank account just walked in to the Commenwealth bank and said id like to open an account, all u need is a passport if you open it within 6 weeks of entering the country, they ask u all the usual stuff.... really really easy, i chose commenwealth as they have the most machines in Oz apparently. Oh i did this about 4 days before i checked into that hostel and it arrived 2 days after the TFN. I didnt even need to give them my tax file number to open it. |
