 A bit of extra money

Not sure how many of you this applies to but here goes. For anyone leaving jobs in England to go travelling(and not going back to work before april) you may have paid too much tax for the year.I will have.

Because you tax code is worked out on the assumption you will be working for a full year. All you need to do is print of a p50 form from the inland revenue and then when you get your p45 through from work...send sheets 2 + 3 along with the completed p50 form and they will send you a cheque for any extra tax you have paid.

I think that anyone leaving jobs before April will be entitled to claim some tax back but the ammount will depend on your yearly income and how many months you have worked. It is hard to explain but Ive just come off the phone to them and it does make sense. Basically the ammount of tax you pay each month is calculated based on the assumption of the total ammount you are going to earn in the year. So I am supposed to earn 27,000 from April-April but when I leave in December I will have only about 20,000 which would mean i have paid too much tax over the year.
I'm going to print out and fill in the p50 forms now and then my parents will send them off when my p45 comes though (as I wont be in the country)

Hope this helps. Every bit of money counts.lol

Don't get me started on this...

This happened to me back in 2006... I only worked six months, so I overpaid tax by £600.

I was told to do this by the tax office, then when I sent the form in they said that they could not process it and I'd have to claim it back after the tax year.

So thus I spent a year in Canada, and came back in late '07. I wrote another letter, including my P45s, 60s etc. and stating I overpaid on the tax. Unfortunately I was a bit too honest about saying I'd done some work in Canada at the time... so I get a letter back asking me for my entire working/earning history since 2003 (FOUR years, in which time most of my jobs were bitty studenty jobs and the payslips were long lost) and also a breakdown of my earnings in Canada so they could TAX me on those. I'd already paid the bleeding tax in Canada!!!

As I could not provide my full employment history, they said I couldn't get my money. I was already owed about £300 from 2003 which they were processing, but then LOST my forms and declined responsibility and said it was my fault for not keeping copies. So I wrote that off, but then not giving me the £600 from 2006 was the final straw.

As an aside, I went on holiday to Canada a few months after my return, went to a tax man to claim my tax returns from my year broad, and had a cheque for $1000 sent to my UK address within a month. And I'm not even a citizen...

Oh. Thats not good. I'm hoping to get mine through just after I go. The woman from the tax office said I could providing I'm not going to be working or claiming jobseekers allowance up until April. If it does come back that I cant claim till after then my parents will send away the forms for me so hopefully i wont loose out. Thanks for the info.

Cheers guys that is very handy. I will download the forms now but not let on I might work in OZ. Dont see why our government gets to tax me on that as well as OZ. To be fair I wont be working out there in this tax year anyway with any luck.

Yes whatever you do don't tell them you plan to work; our government will stop at nothing to continually rob its decent citizens.

I thought you only got taxed by the UK on money you earn here?
Hense why people have off shore accounts for certain businesses and tax dodges

basically, HMRC doesn't know its arse from its elbow. Tell them the bare minimum everytime! I used the P50 / 60 form (or whatever) when I went to Oz to get my tax back, only for them to tell me that because I wasn't "permanently" leaving the country, that they would still consider me a resident for tax purposes and that I couldn't claim a refund until the end of the tax year (6 months later!)

Robbing thieves! How can you tax someone when you didn't work in the UK?! Shows how messed up things are!

I'm leaving my job in January, but returning after in April. So i don't know if i'll be getting any p60 or whatever they are. Maybe i need to ask about this at work! I could do with the extra money!

I got over 700 quid back from UK Tax when I claimed for it. Without that I would have been home from this trip back in April. It gave me a huge boost and in that time I was able to get a job.

Definitely worth getting tax back from the UK if you haven't worked for the whole year.

I'll be applying anyway as I haven't worked a full year for the past two years. just waiting for previous emplyers to send me a statement of earnings as I've lost my p45.
