 Oz Outback

Hey guys,
Me and some pals r looking to head to Oz in 2011 for about 6 months. I was hoping to do a bit of work while I was out there, but I mainly want to go and drive through the outback (maybe from Adelaide to the north) which has always been an ambition of mine. Ive heard that the best way to do this is by buying an old backpacker’s car and seeing the bush that way, rather than renting a car for a long period.

Was just wondering if anyone has any experience of driving through the outback in August/September time, or if anyone has any experiences of riding in an old backpackers car as I hear you very much take your chances with them.

Daniel

Hey,
I'm not long back from Oz, we bought an old car and had no problems at all. We did do a bit of driving in the outback, from Sydney west to broken hill and back then from sydney we headed north to Emerald. Just watch when you are driving at dusk as this is when the Kangaroos like to come out and jump right infront of the car, we had a couple of close shaves, these guys are massive and can do a lot of damage to the car.

Thanks for your input Lauren. I was just a little wary as I havent heard any storys about people buying cheap cars and driving long distance.
And i'll beware of the Kangaroos, I heard they r a nightmare late afternoon lol!

MAke sure you have good breadown cover if youre buying an old car, or any car that is! Also have plenty of water and food on board, a spare battery for the mobile phone and a survival bivy-bag in case you get stranded they cost next to nothing.

Hello mate, Me and my girlfriend did a trip down the East Coast, across to Borken Hill and up to Alice Springs and then Uluru etc then headed back down to the south. Although we didn't buy a car we did rent a van so i can only comment on that side of things.

Renting was perfect for us, as Mudman says breakdown cover is vital so with renting you get all that included. Our reason for renting was our concerns over a bought car in the outback but after actually driving the 12,000kms we did i think a bought car would be fine. It's pretty remote in some parts but not half as remote as I was led to believe and there's alot more people on the roads as I thought there would be.

As everyone says, carry an extra everything with you and try not to drive at night as the animals are at there most active.

Have fun

Andrew

and also is there a specific rental company that is cheap for backpackers?

I fink I got the info from this site. I no there's a backpackers car dealership in most major cities, Sydney having the most. Check this site, I'm sure it was on here. Or u could always ask car rental companies if they need anything delivered to other cities, that way u haven't got to pay for the rental only the petrol

Fuck food, water and insurance bullshit. What u really need is a fly squatter preferably an electric one they are great fun, when u run out of flies zap each other.
