Hey All,

Right I was all decided I was going to quit my office job on xmas eve. With my holiday left I would have xmas off and then get paid until the New Year. I would then leave for my trip on the 17/01.

The thing is now I hear in certain parts of Oz you need over a grand a month to survive. I am thinking should I just bite the bullet and work the extra 2 weeks and give myself another £600 or so.

I work in a pub too so will be getting extra cash while I am off over xmas.

I also need to sell my car as it will be funding a large part of my trip by like 3.5k! On top of what I save about 3k. I was thinking those 2 weeks off would be good for that.

I also really hate my office job and its moving to another location in a week which will add an extra 2 hours travelling time to my day.

My first stop off is LA doing a trip of the west coast which most of my food and accom are already paid for. But I have 3 days either side of trip to entertain myself and feed myself. So I figure that wont be cheap.

I was hoping with my 2 weeks or so off to say proper good byes and stuff to friends and family as I will be gone for a year.

I am so confused. Because the money would be really handy. But I cant stand the job and once it moves next week its going to be even more unbearable.

So I guess what I am trying to ask..... What is everyone else doing? Are you working up until you go? Or are you going to chill about and have some time to get some stuff done? Are you worried that its going to cost over a 1k a month in oz just to survive? let alone travel?

that's a reeeally difficult situation and if it wasn't going to add that massive commute onto your day i'd definitely say bite the bullet and get the extra money - but that's a lot of extra time spent travelling! i suppose you need to work out how short you'll be for money otherwise and if you're okay with not doing certain trips or activites then i'd say quit and spend the time with your family and friends.

i personally am doing everything i can to get more money! i have an office job too which i hate, i did get a bar job for a few weeks but it was truly awful, they were messing me around with hours and stuff and the pay was absolute shit so i quit that. i'm now applying for weekend/christmas temp stuff for evening and weekend work to supplement my funds. especially as my office is completely closed for two weeks over xmas so that's half a month's wages gone!

i finish working here 15th Jan and fly on 21st so i have a week or so with family, friends and boyfriend. i'd like more time but i need the cash!

i'm rambling now but the way i see it i'd rather work my arse off now and not be worrying about cash the whole time while i'm away - it's only temporary anyway and i think you'll be really glad for the extra cash xx

Thanks Sarah! the 15th will be leave date too if I stick at it.

The extra commute kinf of buggers up my pub job too so its all so hard to work coz I could swap just work weekends on the weeks I know I wont make it back I suppose.

I wont be majorly short for the money. But all money is helpful.

I suppose I should think that if I work here for aslong as poss thats time in OZ I dont have to work.

So confusing coz then I think of family and friends. Maybe Il do 10 days or something of the new year get myself a bit of extra cash and time.

hmmmm

In one respect I think it depends on if you think you will be ok with the money that you do save - after quitting you job.
I reckon you should bite the bullet and soldier on- it will be so worth it when you're sitting on a a white sandy beach in the balmy sunshine.

The extra time would be useful before you leave, but try and think of it as you won't have to work for however long your going away, you'll be having the time of your life instead
Me personally - I've got 2 weeks 1 day left at work (woopwoop) and I had some annual leave left to take, so I will have week off before I fly out.

Good luck

Wow two weeks and one day........ I am jealous!

I think you are right. £600 is nearly a month living in oz somewhere rurally, well 2 weeks anyway.

I might leave a little earlier otherwise I will leave on the 15th and go on the 17th that might be a bit manic I suppose.

But then I can pack in the evenings so I suppose its not that much of a big deal. Least it will keep me busy I suppose.
