Hiya
I will be going to NZ next oct/nov time travelling from Auckland to Christchurch, was just wondering what the weather is like and what il need to pack? The rest of my trip is in hot sunny places so need to know if i need lots of winter stuff too!!

Also for general walking in NZ (not up mountains and through glaziers...) would I need walking boots or could i get away with trainers/general boots?

All other advice and tips welcome

Thanks!!

p.s. I will be doing just over 2 weeks on the magic bus...has anybody else done this and is it long enough? x

It will be spring time, so not too cold. I wouldn't worry about carrying too much warm clothes with you, there are loads of cheap clothing shops (The Warehouse has shops all over and offer really cheap goods) and charity shops where you'll be able to get more stuff if you need it. Remember it can get chilly even in warm places, at night and at altitude. One warm jumper is worth having, but better still is layers you can put over eachother. I recommend long sleeve thermal top and trousers; they might not be very fashionable but can make any outfit a lot warmer and take up little room.

Footwear really depends on what you plan to do. Trainers won't give ankle support but should be ok for well made lowland footpaths.

The tour buses can be an easy way of getting round the place quickly. Some people hop off them and stay in one place for a bit, while others just stay on for the length of the journey. A 2 week tour won't cover everywhere, you'll need at leave 3-4 weeks and I reckon at least 6 weeks is ideal for seeing NZ fully.

yea in terms of footwear you'll be sweet as with trainers, i've lived here (nz) my whole life and walked a few mountain tracks etc and have never put on a pair of walking boots, i think they're over rated unless your doing a decent sized multi day tramp. Also the weather will be nice, was like 22 degrees today, real warm but depending on where in country you are you could get some cold winds and cold nights. but only gets warmer from here into january.

What Essbombers said

But would be a good idea to bring something warmer if you are heading to the lower South Island... I remember snow on some of the mountains and rugging right up in Te Anau last time I was there (Mid summer, between Christmas and NYE)

yep trainers is fine and i did the major walks like routeburn/kepler/tongariro in a decent pair of waterproof trainers.

i would say though if you can get more time then try and extend past the two weeks - most people only give nz two weeks then wish they had more time - i would say min 3 weeks to be able to relax, enjoy and take in the best bits - otherwise i gues you have a perfect excuse t come back
