 South Island advice

Hello, im wanting to see some of the South Island but I only have a week to do so and I would like to go as far South as possible.

Im just wondering what the best way of travelling around the South Island is in this length of time? Looked on a few tour sites (kiwiexperience/stray) but not sure if going from and returning to Christchurch would allow me to go as far as Invercargill as I had hoped.

Would using public transport be a practical way to see the place? Around Nov/Dec I will be there but only have a week in the south as it is only a short 3 week break from work but better than nothing!

I know this post probably doesn't make loads of sense but any help is appreciated.

You could use Magic Bus and do the Tranzalpine Experience tour and then add the Catlins/Milford combo on. Should be a minimum of 7 days then.

Any reason why you want to go as far south as Invercargill ? You'd probably enjoy the Milford Sound extra rather than the trip to Invercargill. But it does depend on your reasons why.

I went to Invercargill, and I also did Stewart Island and the Catlins coaster route back to Christchurch and enjoyed it but spent the majority of it on the bus, off the bus, take some pics and then back on.

Not sure about the public transport connections, I would reckon they go to all the same places but you'd have to check timetables etc as to when they leave each day.

Magic, Stray etc all require you to stay overnight in certain places.

Plans have changed again. My flight is now to Queenstown and im hoping to travel with stray on the burt pass for four nights. I will be going to milford and Stewart Island which is one of things I wanted to do as my cousin said he had a great time there. Really looking forward to it now as ive had no days off work yet this year because of my trip Got a great week or so in the north planned aswell.
