| The railway routes in Canada are fairly limited, I'd personally prefer to use greyhound, but if the rail works for where you want to go then stick with it.

| Ouch, even a hostel is about $30 each a night, you might need to shorten the trip or save up a bit more | |

| I'm not sure what really is in the 'middle bit' between East and West except long staright flat roads especially in winter and the distance is vast, maybe consider a internal flight from Toronto to Vancouver as most of the main tourist sites are fairly close to vancouver
Niagara is a must see from Toronto as well as heading further East to Montreal, Quebec etc and the Great Lakes From Vancouver there are loads of options including Banff, Jasper, Calgary, Glaier NP (mostly in the US) the islands off vancouver or even a trip down to Seatle though you will have to check for openings of the NP's in Winter Personally i'd see cities of the East by Greyhound and rent a car from Vancouver but your budget might not be sufficient as others have stated, Check Seat 61 http://www.seat61.com/Canada.htm the rocky Mountaineer doesn't run in winter. Although it sounds good doing long distance train travel as you get to see more think twice i did San fran to Chicago and it took almost 3 days (due to delays) and no matter how comfy the seat you get pretty bored, uncomfortable, feeling dirty etc |

| £20 isn't enough to even camp (not that you could in Winter) and eat per day for two | |
