I'm applying for my visa in December, but I am going to Florida first so I will only be spending the 6 months in Toronto. I was just wondering if anyone has done anything similar, and had any suggestions and or general advice they could offer me regarding how easy it is to find a place to stay work situation etc etc.

I am travelling alone too if they makes much difference?

Thanks, Thomas.

Yeah I spent 6 months in Toronto a couple of years back, its a great city. I went pre-credit crunch but work was very easy to find, I just signed up to a load of temping agencies and I always seemed to have too much work on the table. I hear from friends living there that there are lots of jobs about again, so you might be going at the right time. Google AltisHR, I found them to be the best for office work.

As for accomodation, Craiglist is the place to look. I lived in the Annex area which was great - lots of fun places to hang out and within very easy distance of the centre.

That's weird I was gonna say AltisHR as well. I found them to be the only agency to welcome backpackers, and they got me constant work throughout the summer. Also if you're going with bunac then check the job boards that they have at the swap office. I'd recommend staying at the global village backpacker hostel on king and spadina as you'll meet loads of other people in the same boat

Thank you both for your help.

One more thing I have like $8000 saved up so far will that be enough? to tie me over for a bit until I find work?

Oh yes easily, I only took about $3000 when I went.

I'm also applying the BUNAC student visa in December but mine's a bit of a complicated situation as I'm applying in December with a view to leaving Christmas 2010. I've asked them and they said that it will be issued by February which means I can enter Canada up until the end of January 2011 which will activate it. I want to apply for one this December so I can go on the student visa (I graduated in July so wouldn't be eligible for next year's applications) meaning that I could apply for a standard 18-30s visa later on if i chose.

phew that was complicated!

I'm also looking at doing CELTA (the cambridge tefl course) before I go and picking up some work in a language school, does anyone know how easy this is?
I will try and do some teaching work for a while and want to work at a ski resort too, any recommendations?

I'm already planning this although I'm going on a 6 month RTW trip in 98 days!

Heya,

Im going to Toronto in January with bunac. Got visa and flights etc but plan to look for work and a place to live when I get out there. Hoping to stay in Toronto about 4-5 months then a couple months travelling across to the west, then spend another 4-5 months in vancouver working.

From what Ive heard, its fairly easy getting a job when you're out there as long as you're not fussy. I just hope to get something like bar, restaurant work or something thats relatively easy to pick up and leave after a few months.

Im more concerned about finding a flat to rent, because Im travelling alone and Im worried I wont meet anyone to share with if you know what I mean.

If you book yourself into a hostel for the first week or so, then you'll have no problem finding people to share with. Though I moved in with some Canadians (all girls... all photography models... I was in heaven ) and had a brilliant time, in fact I barely knew any brits in Toronto in the end but had an amazing social life (I was there in the winter, so most of the BUNAC people were out west anyway).

Its so easy to meet people so don't worry... for example I e-mailed a canadian guy on Craigslist about a room before I left and although the room was taken before I arrived in Toronto, he invited me out to the cinema with about 20 of his mates on my first night there. After that they always invited me on their nights out (about 2-3 times a week!) and are still close friends to this day. They're like that over there.

Also BUNAC/SWAP hold lots of social events too, particularly in the summer, so you'll meet lots of others that way.

So... when looking for a flat, just take the plunge, you never know who you might meet!

If you are looking to get a job in a bar or restaurant, you need to do the SMART SERVE certificate. If can be done online for $34.95.

https://smartserve.org/

It's true Canadians are really friendly.
On that note, if anyone wants to hang when they get down here I live in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) and don't leave on my GAP year till April. So, send me a facebook message.

Cheers.
