when you arrive in south africa you automatically get a 90day holiday visa if you want to stay longer you can extend this for another 90day, (so six months in total) at the south african embassy.
If you are going to extent your stay dont leave it to the last minuite or they may say no, you have to write a letter saying why you want to stay, have proof that you have money to support yourself (bank statement), have a return/onwards plane ticket and it cost about 500rand (about £45). if you are doing charity work out there they may do this for you or help you.
if you over stay you visa (as i did) you will just get a fine when you leave the country off (1500r) approx £142

You cant really get a working holiday visa as there are are a shortage of jobs for the locals, but many people i know work at backpackers, as waitresses ect for cash in hand, or work in exchange for food /accommodation although the wages are very little compared to here.

hope this of some help any other questions feel free to ask, my e-mail is orca2_uk@yahoo.co.uk
