Here are some travel tips I picked up:

1) You may want to check out renting an apartment rather than a hotel. Often times the weekly rates end up being cheaper than a week at a hotel. Hostels are also good. Sites like craiglist.com can help with this

2) If you're going to be in NYC, you may not want to rent a car. The cost per day plus gas plus parking which in NYC is a fortune, is not worth it. You can get a travel pas for the subways and buses for a decent price.

3) Renting mobile phones is a good idea. If you're coming from the UK talknsave.co.uk is a good source for phones and SIM card rentals. (sorry don't know if you're not coming from the UK). Skype is great, but you want to have a phone with you at all times..for safety amongst all.

4) America is very diverse, but VERY big, unless you have a lot of money and a lot of time, you may need to pick what cities and areas are your top priority and find many things to do in those areas.

Enjoy your trip
