Not a chance these days, mate.

$1 goes absolutely nowhere in SE Asia.

In Thailand today, $1 is 33 baht. Even the very cheapest street food meal (pad thai) is 20-25 baht per serving these days. Cheapest accommodation is about 100 baht, and that's hard to find. Bottle of water is 20baht at cheapest, but more like 40 baht.

Even $5 a day is really tough these days in SE Asia. Impossible in the big cities and down on the islands in Thailand and Malaysia.

$10 a day is a more realistic challenge for you, and you'll still struggle in a lot of areas. $1 a day isn't possible.

Although that sounds like a great idea lol how much would it cost roughly to live comfortably for a month (comfortably does include at least a hostel lol)

Nope, but it's tough. Swathes of the countryside in Thailand, Malaysia and Laos are now national parks, and the animals are protected by law.

Those countries in particular have wiped out whole species and pushed most others to the brink of extinction, so the parks are a means of protecting what's left.

You can try and hunt small game in some areas (jungle rats, birds and occasionally pigs), but a lot of folks are surprised at just how little wildlife they come across when they go trekking in Laos, Thailand and other neighbouring countries. I've done 2 and 3 days treks all over Thailand, most areas in Laos, and a good few in Cambodia and Vietnam, and sometimes we've seen nothing whatsoever - not even birds. Vietnam in particular has some very strict laws now, and park rangers have been known to shoot poachers.

If you go hunting, make sure you do it well outside of the national parks, basically. Police and authorities over there love nothing more than fining farangs. Fines go straight in their pockets.

Fishing, on the other hand, is awesome out there. You can pull some pretty mean pre-historic looking shit out of most rivers. They've killed off all the crocs in SE Asia too, so it's safe.
