Things to do in Singapore - ANY ideas!?

PostPosted: Fri Sep 25, 2009 2:02 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hey guys

Heading to Singapore on my way back to Oz. This will be the second time I have been GR, just a stopping point for my cheap flight I booked.

I have done two of the museums, the zoo and Sentosa island and generally wandered around the city.

Can anyone recommend ANY little things for me to do (that isn't in the Lonely Planet, cos I think I did it all!)...? Help! What am I going to do for another 1.5 days in Singapore arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh

Dress up nice and smart and go to the jimmy choo store and pretend your going to buy loads of shoes - get the shop assistants to run about after you for a while then flounce out saying it all looks a bit cheap.

Note: can be repeated in any of the designer shops

Highly amusing and passes sometime!!

Cause some big trouble in little China town!!

If you had slightly longer you could go on a short excursion into Malaysia, but 1.5 days isn't really worth the effort.

Personally, I think I'd just chill out and potter about. Maybe see if I could get some cheap electronics in Little India, grab a tasty bite to eat in one of the many street food courts and wash it down with a few beers. Is there any beach on Singapore Island? That would be an idea to escape the city.

I spent a good hour at an underground station, people watching everyone who couldn't understand how the ticket machines work, a lot of fun!

Haha thanks guys, some great suggestions there!
I'm not sure if there's a beach on Singapore Island? Went to Sentosa island for the beach last time, but I'm pretty cure it was man made. The sea was filthy, and the beach wasn't much better, but was quite fun watching all the huuuge groups of Asians having fun with their volleyball and continuous photo taking!

Just some good people watching could be on the cards then! I love Little India. Found the Arab Quarter last time which I may head back to!
People watching, photo taking, eating and causing havoc in expensive designer shops! Oo and think I'm going to head up to that viewy thingy up by Raffles. (Pretty sure I wouldn't get in to Raffles - my mates got chucked out trying to go for a Singapore Sling because they weren't dressed smart enough in summer dresses and nice sandels! I am fairly scruffy compared to them!)

Thanks again guys - enough to keep me entertained for a whole week there hehe!xx

What is the dress code for raffles? I can't see them having a problem with summer dresses and smart flipflops will be all I have unless they let me get away with a dirty pair of chinese knock off converse...?

If you go in the early evening you'll be fine. Sounds like is was the sandals that was the problem with your friends. They don't allow sandals, flip flops, or shorts. Blokes are supposed to have a collar on (polo tshirt is fine), too.

Raffles is one of the most famous hotels in the world.

Although it was built by three Turkish men, it has long stood as a symbol of British colonialism. It was a place for the rich and famous (Europeans) to congregate, and Asians were excluded.

Today it still gives a nod towards the old colonial era, and the hotel still looks very much the same as it did when it was first built in the late 1800s. The management in the Long Bar encourage people to drop their peanut shells on the floor, as they would have done back in the day. The also invented the cocktail Singapore Sling here, but these days it's pre-mixed, and a bit expensive. It's obviously worth doing, just for the photo, but heading out to the Writer's Bar and having a Martini is probably a classier experience.

Well worth a visit, but you will have to dress up. They don't need scruffy backpackers nursing one cocktail and taking up a seat which could be filled with a rich businessman.

I'm sure they will be fine. Just wear long trousers or a long(ish) skirt and you shouldn't have a problem.

Last time I was there I went in dark jeans, 'smart' trainers, and a kaftan. As a bloke you do need a collar on your tshirt, or to wear a shirt.
