 Komodo island...doable for independent travellers?

Im trying to work out how most budget/independent travellers get to komodo/rinca islands, as the only info I can find seems to say you have to go as part of a tour, (e.g. 3 day cruise with a few hours on komodo). I really dont want to do that, but not sure how else we can get ourselves out there!

I will be going to other parts of Indonesia also, such as gili islands, lombok, bali and sumatra, so also trying to work out if one of these places can be used as a jumping off point for Komodo.

Any help appreciated, I really wanna see those giant lizards!!

I'm looking into doing this too and as far as I can make out the tour thing is the only option as no boats stop there otherwise. Sounds like you can go from either Lombok or Flores. Do let us know if you find an alternative!

Sorry I know this is an old thread, but just wondered if Mcuriosity, you went to Indonesia or managed to plan your trip?
Thinking about going to Indonesia and just wondered if it possible to do independently/as a girl on you own!

Anyone else been? Would you recommend it?

I did this trip and organised it from the Gili Islands. It cost around 100 greens for a 4 day trip from Lombok to Rinca/Komodo with trips to islands in between. It was quality. 22 people on a boat with a hole drilled in the floor for a toilet.

To be honest Rinca and Komodo weren't massively impressive, once I saw the Komodos I was pretty satisfied and ready to leave. The trip finished in Lubaunbajo in Flores and I think you can organise individual trips from there.

I was more impressed by the island of Flores, its quality. Especially the villages around Bajawa.

I went it was really cool. You can charter a boat from flores that will take you to komodo.
Not something you'd want or be able to afford to do on your own but with a friend/group of people its definately do able.
Me and my mate had our own boat with the captain and skipper who cooked for us every meal!!
The took us to Komodo and another place to snorkel and to an island full of bats to watch them take off at dusk.
That was well impressive.
Its worth going even if you go on a tour, seeng the dragons is one of my all time highlights
