Hi!
I'm very envious you're off in a week. I have been back a month now after a 9 month RTW trip! I flew into Singapore also and went through Malaysia to Thailand.
After Singapore (which I loved by the way-but very expensive!) we flew to Kota Kinabulu in Sabah, Borneo and spent a week traveling around- if you have time for this then you should do it because it was definetly the highlight of my time in Malaysia and flights were only £30 each (Air Asia). In a week we went to Kota kinabulu town, kota kinabula NP, sepilok organgutan centre, a jungle lodge on the kinabatagan river (saw a wild elephant and organutan!) and stayed on stilt huts on an island called Mabul, with unbelievable snorkelling!
After this we flew back to Kuala Lumper; went to chinatown, the night market, petronas towers- get up early to get tickets as they only give so many away each day, we went around 9am and got tickets for the 3pm viewing, we also got a local bus to the Batu Caves, which are just out of town which were impressive.
Then we got a bus to the Cameron highlands full of tea estates. The easiest one to get to on foot is the boh tea estate where you can have a cup of freshly made tea and a scone looking out over the tea plantation. You can easily get on a tour for £5 which does it all for you. We then got a bus to Kota Bharu (not much here) then went to the perhentians- we stayed on Kecil island (alot more backpacker accommodation here) it is a beautiful island with good waves one side of the island and nice beaches. Although it didn't stop raining for 3 days when we were there!! Also if you plan to drink take your own alcohol as beer is very expensive on the island. You can do lots of different snorkelling and scuba diving trips here aswell for quite cheap.
We then crossed the border into Thailand no problem and made our way to Krabi- very good for rock climbing for beginners and experts. Also some quite nice beaches around here. Then got the ferry to Koh Phi Phi- lovely island but quite expensive for thailand anyway. there's a pretty good nightlife here aswell. This is where I had my first bucket! There's lots of trips to "the beach" beach etc there's also a walk to the highest of the island with amazing views of it.
Then went to Samui- quite developed compared to the other islands but I liked it. I hired out a scooter and drove around the island for day visiting waterfalls, temples, beaches etc. It only cost £4 for the day! Then we got a ferry to Koh Phangan.
You're going to have great time!!!
