Ive been to KL before but nowhere else in Malaysia and its between spending all my time in Thailand and getting a flight from Krabi or Phuket - Singapore or doing the train journey all the way through and I'm thinking it would be nice to see the bits I haven't really seen will probably only have a week to get from thailand to Singapore so can't see everything. I've heard good things about Camaron highlands...!

Just wondering if it wold be better to spend more time in Thailand or to see a bit more of Malaysia as I head down any ideas??

I did want to go into Lao instead for a week but I don't think a week is going to be long enough???

So it sort of between these options and this is the last bit of planing I need to do for this as I know everywhere else I want to go just not sure the best way to spend my time??!!

Only place I've been there is Tioman, and that was beautiful.

Hi,

I see that you have been to Kuala Lumpur before, I am going to be there for a few days at the beginning of November and was wondering what you would say the highlights were? I want to try and get to see the Batu Caves but it all depends on time really!!

Hey.

Yeah I went there in Jan 2008, I think I spent 4 days there but you only need a few. There is Petronas Towers, (they only give out so many tickets a day to go up there so you have to get there early to get a ticket to go up to viewing bridge). However I thought the views were loads better from the KL tower and you can spend as long as you want up there. Apart from that there is China town and little India area where the curries are amazing (if you like curry) - i think it was called Bukit Bintang. There is always shopping (like there is everywhere) but i dont think there is much else there its def worth visiting though.

I'd go for Malaysia over Laos, just because it's on your way down to Singapore, so that'll give you a bit more time, and, to see the best of Laos, you really have to try and get off the beaten track a little bit, which takes time.

I only had about a week and a half to see what I could of Malaysia but I managed to see Penang, Perhentian Islands, Cameron Highlands and KL. It was a bit of a rush but it was do-able. They're all worth seeing, but Perhentian Islands and the Cameron Highlands are a must and I wish I'd left more time to explore them, so I'd say spend most of your time in these two places.

There's also Taman Negara and Melaka that I heard good things about and I wish I'd had time to see.

Remember that just about all the eastern islands in Malaysia are pretty much off bounds between mid Oct and Feb because of the east monsoon.

You can get to some of them, but they're not much fun at that time of year. You'll be the only westerner there and just about everything will be closed.

Tioman is probably your best bet if you wanted to go to an eastern island during monsoon. It stays open all the way through, although things die off there too.

Yeh I was about to say the Perhentians but Tom's right, no go in the monsoon season. Malaysia is fantastic though, if you can make it over to Borneo, which is way easier to get around than you would expect, then do it. Was the absolute highlight of my trip and if you like snorkelling/scuba diving you'll be blown away by Sipadan. Mainland Malaysia I'd say KL is cool and I also quite liked Kota Bharu. Definitely a country worth spending some time in, Cameron Highlands are beautiful too and the people are lovely.

At the end of my trip, I asked myself why don't more people go to Malaysia... Its seriously stunning. I think most people either don't leave enough time or / and spend more time in Thailand.

From a personal point of view I thought it was a hell of a lot better than Thailand, Nice and friendlier people, better scenery (this was prob due to the seasons...), ease of getting around and just generally a better 'experience'

Without sounding like a travel snob! Ha... I also thought there was better quality of travellers. I met loads of idiots in Thailand who just wanted to get drunk etc (fun for about a week...) In Malaysia, I found cooler, chilled out people who you could sit round with and have a chat.

KL, Cameron Highlands, Teman Negara and Perenthians. And thats not including the east. Stay clear of Penang. Plan about 2 weeks.

In a word, Don't miss out!!!

thanks guys!

I think I might look into Cameron Highlands, will they be ok in November as they are not on the east coast?? It does look beautiful. I had a look at the Perhentian Islands and they look lovely as well but if its monsoon its pointless lol plus I might be 'island-out' after Thailand when I get there so I have made my choice.

I am taking a train from thai border through Malaysia, is there any train stops for towns in that area or will I need to get a bus from somewhere?

Ditto everybody elses suggestions.

Malaysia is a gem and I enjoyed it much more than Thailand.

KL is a fab city, with all the modern comforts of home and still lots of culture thrown in for good measure.

Perhentains are amazing, but just watch out for the gaint lizards!

Taman Negara is also well worth a visit. The best curry I have ever eaten ( and I have travelled all over India ) was consumed in Georgetown, Penang.

Enjoy paradise.
