We fly into Beijing on 1st November and out of Hong Kong. We have just over 2 weeks to play with.

At the mo our thoughts are to check out Great Wall, Xian and Shanghai.
Can anyone recommend anything we shouldnt miss? We would like to see some pandas too.

Yangshuo near Guilin. This photo doesn't do it justice, it really is stunning

Also just a short distance from Yangshuo is the rice terraces of Longsheng

I would say Yunnan province isn't to be missed, but in only 2 weeks you really haven't got time. I don't think you've got time for Yangshuo though without dropping Shanghai (or flying a lot). I'm sure Shanghai is well worth seeing, but it's just another super modern constructed (probably still a building site) city, while the natural and historical wonders are far more interesting. Each to their own though.

Another place worth a look if you have time is Pingyao halfway between Beijing and Xi'an. It's stunning but does get very busy with Chinese tourists.

I had seen photos of Yangshuo but I didnt know whereabouts it was! Thanks!
I am more interested in seeing parts like Yangshuo to be honest so if Shanghai will have to be missed, so be it!
2 weeks isnt a long time in China so I would really like to make the most of the time we have there.

Where will you be entering and exiting China from? That makes quite a difference to where, what order and how much you can fit in.

In sbout 4 weeks at a push you could do Shanghai, Beijing, Pingyao, Xi'an, Chengdu, Dali, Lijiang, Zhongdian, Kunming, Guilin (Yangshuo & Longsheng) and then down to Hanoi (or to Hong Kong). I'm not sure if you can get a Vietnam visa in HK, but Kunming it the most popular place to get one in China. If you plan to visit HK and then go to Vietnam overland, you'll need a double entry (or get a second) Chinese visa, as HK counts as leaving China.

I'm not sure what they're currently offering for visas. Previously, they have offered 30, 60 or 90 day visas depending on what your plans are, but during the olympics (and in the buildup to it) they were only offering 30 day visas. I believe this has been increased again but I'm not sure.

You can get a 30 or a 60 day chinese visa i think. You can also get multiple or single entry.

ive just left china and i can defo say that Yangshou is not to be missed, i also loved Pingyao.

i recommend the Huang hua part of the great wall, its really remote and i saw no-one else there when i was on it. I also spent the night on the great wall too which is becoming popular. It only cost us about 3 quid to do it all aswell,as supposed to the hostel tours you can do!

Yeh i agree on Yangshou. Had a great time there! Plenty of Western bars, stalls and activities (rafting, kayaking and all that jazz).
Good fun.

I suppose the easy availability of good beer, food and socialising helps but the tourism in the town was one of the worst parts of Yangshuo for me. I really enjoyed hiring a bike from a hostel for $1 and heading off into the countryside on my own. Getting a bus to the town up river and then taking a boat trip was nice too. But you can do it yourself from the bus station, there's dodgy agents who will charge hundreds of Yuan. I think I paid 40Y.
