try STA travel, you get discount if your a student or under 26.
i looked on their departing end of feb 2010, not sure how long you want to stay there so said a month, and its £414.

also try trailfinders, they can be quite good too

If you book far enough in advance you can get flights with Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur for £100. You can fly from there to a few places in China - Tianjin (near Beijing, you can get a taxi to the train station, then a train to Beijing - half an hour - for £10-£12 for the two); Guilin (in the south, Guanxi province); Shenzhen (which is further south and near Hong Kong); Guangzhou, also in the south in Gusngdong province; Hangzhou (for Shanghai) and Haikou (on Hunan island off the south coast, near Vietnam).

Air Asia is a no-frills airline though and anything nice you want you may have to pay extra - and I mean everything - food, tv, even luggage. But it does work out cheaper and it gets you where you want, I managed to take a pretty full backpack on as hand luggage though. Obviously it is a bit of a hassle having to book separate flights, but the airport is small and it could give you a couple of days in Malaysia if you wanted (although there are daily flights to China).

I was going to say that about Air Asia - they do the cheap shorter flights too, and so do Tiger and Jetstar (not sure of their exact destinations, but they do some asia)

I've done the Air Asia KL - Stansted, and am going it again in a couple of weeks.

It's absolutely fine - just the same comfort as a normal flight. But you have to pay for food, comfort kit, drinks all extra. Also, there are only 60 in flight entertainment kits on the flight (its a big plane!), and the chances of getting one of those on board is quite slim, so take lots of things to do! I've filled my ipod up with music, podcasts TV and film for my flight back there!
