| I did pretty much the same route as you are doing except finished in Beijing.
Our route was: - Nanning - Guilin (don't stay here long, it's boring- but go to Elephant Hill Park) - Yangshuo (do not miss this place - only an hour by bus from Guilin and just wonderful) - Kunming - Chengdu and Leshan (for Dafo; the giant Buddha, giant pandas, etc) - Xi'an (terracotta warriors) - Luoyang (Shaolin temples) - Pingyao (best preserved city in China and gorgeous) - Beijing. This took us a month to do. You could do the same kind of route then go from Beijing to Shanghai. Buy train tickets everywhere (get hostel staff to write the train destination and your chosen class down in Chinese characters and hand it to the staff at the ticket office). Use hard sleeper which is super comfy and so fun. Top bunks are cheapest but you get a bit more privacy and your luggage will be on the luggage rack on the same level as you; middle bunks are probably my favourite, and bottom bunk is most expensive but you get everyone's shoes under your bed, and during the day everyone uses your bed as a seat (cos you can't sit up much on the middle or at all on the top bunks). China is one of my two favourite countries in the world. It is absolutely AMAZING. P.S. You can read my blog of the route here |
