 Laos Visa

PostPosted: Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:43 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hey Guys, Just wondering if someone could answer a question for me. I'm currently in Hanoi and I'm Heading to Laos by bus in the next day or two. I'd herd that i could get a visa at the boarder but the hotel I'm staying in says I can't. I've had a look about the net and some sites say you can obtain a visa at all Boarder crossing and other's say you can only get a visa at certain boarder crossings. Has anyone taken the bus from Hanoi to Laos recently and knows what the story is? Any info would be great. Thanks.
Adrian.

Hi,

Last info i had was that you could get Laos visas on arrival at 3 borders with Vietnam but not the other three. The ones where you can get them are:

Lao Bao - Dansavanh
Cau Treo - Nam Phao
Nam Can - Nong Haet (though this may have changed)

The borders that do not issue visas on arrival:

Bo Y - Attapeu
Cha Lo - Na Phao
Nam Xoi - Na Maew

Hope that helps!

Here is some info i found on here if any more questions ask tommarvelle he seems to know what hes on about

Laos:

All Laos tourist visas cost money. No visa exemptions (apart from the Japanese and citizens of ASEAN countries) For the rest of us, we get a 30 day visa on arrival these days, and it costs USD$35 for Brits and most europeans. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, then 60 day visas are available by prior arrangement only (cheaper at Laos embassies/consulates, and more expensive from travel agents).

If you get the 60 day visa, make sure they actually stamp you in for 60 days when you get to the border, because there's every chance they'll fuck up and only stamp you in for 30 days. This is really, really, really annoying if you don't realise at the time, because there's no comeback once you've left the border. There are 2 borders where you can't get a visa on arrival, so you must pre-arrange. Those borders are Paksan and Dom Kralor (the border with Cambodia in the far south. Careful with this one, because it's often referred to by a number of different names, one being Don Dhet.)

Hey thanks for the info. The boarder at Nam Xoi - Na Maew is the closest to Hanoi so i'm guessing that'll be the one the bus takes. Looks like I better get a Visa in Hanoi then. Had a bus booked for tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to change it.Thanks again Jordan.

For Vietnam/Laos crossings, read this:

http://www.travelfish.org/board/post/visabordercrossings/172_visa-and-border-crossing-news---please-read-this-before-pos-ting-#lv

There's always a lot of mis-information circulating locally about these borders. Much of what you'll hear is bullshit from hostel owners and local travel agents trying to get you to pay them to pre-arrange visas that you don't actually need to pre-arrange, but it's also true that historically some of these borders have not been general thoroughfares for travellers.

It's always interesting to find out the exact situation on the ground with regards to the more remote borders, so if you happen to find out anything new when you're out there, be sure to let us know.

Hey Ashleigh, Thanks for the info too. Was just talking to someone else that works in the Hotel and now they are saying I'd be able to get the visa at the boarder. The plot thickens. If tommarvelle is on later he might be able to shed some light on the topic

Hey guys, turns out the Route the bus takes from Hanoi into Laos uses the Cau Treo - Nam Phao crossing. So you travel down a good bit and then cut across skipping the crossings above that don't have the visa on arrival facilities. You just grab your visa at Cau Treo - Nam Phao then. Just in case anyone else is wondering about it. That's the route our bus took anyhoo, chickens and all
