Hi,

I am planning on travelling into Laos from northern Thailand then making my way through Laos onto cambodia. I was wondering what is the best route from Northern Thailand to cambodia going through laos? I will have about a month to do it.

get the slow boat down to luang probang and spend a couple of days there, then head to vang vieng and go tubing baby!!! i ended up working there for 2 and a half months. vientienne is nothing special so skip it and head straight down to 4000 islands. the border crossing is a piece of cake happy days

It's easy just to slip down the western edge of Laos via Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane, and then down to 4000 Islands, but you miss a massive chunk of the country that's absolutely superb.

There's plenty in and around Vientiane to see - I find most people don't give the place enough credit, and write it off without going out to find the cool stuff nearby.

But there's tonnes of wicked stuff up around Phonsavan, Phongsali, Houaphan and even Bokeo. If you draw a line on a map along the route that most backpackers take, you'll see that there's 90% of the rest of the country that they're missing.

Get off the beaten track. It can take a bit of effort sometimes, but it's completely worthwhile and you'll still meet some other backpackers in the far-flung corners of Laos, while seeing stuff that the vast majority of backpackers never go anywhere near.

Vang Vieng is a really cool little place, and I'm not one of these travel snobs who'll tell you not to go there because it's not 'proper Laos', but you can't deny the fact that it's definitely geared towards young western backpacker and isn't representative of Laos.

Laos is awesome, but if you miss out the rest of the country, then you're missing a proper treat.

where would u recommend to stop, heading up from 4000 islands? id like to go somewhere east, about halfway between 4000 islands and vientiane, or a couple of stops out that way!!

This is the direction im going and want to see as much as possible. I think its a shame to miss out great chunks of country because its not the 'popular' backpackers route or someone has advised against it due to a personal bad experience or what they have been told. I dont want to write anything off til i've experienced it myself.
