I think the getting pregnant in prison concerns me more than the drugs!
I can't see her dying. Surely it would damage their tourism? Plus the likes of Amnesty would have a field day at her trial!

Its awful.

Even if she was carrying them knowingly I think it would have a been a daft decision she made to make a bit of extra cash without thinking it through properly.

No way does she deserve death.

Scary situation.

If she'd be caught in the UK with that much heroin on her, she'd probably have been put in prison for possession.

Gordon Ramsay's brother was put in prison in Bali for 10 months for carrying 100mg of heroin. He should've been given 10 years but they were lenient.

She was carrying 680,000 milligrams! 375mg is fatal in a non-user. 680g is worth around £30k in the UK.

You don't take risks with drugs, especially in Asian countries, where the death penalty is used regularly.

I don't know how it would have snuck into her luggage without her knowledge. If someone else packed it there without her knowing, I'd have to assume it was someone travelling on to the same place as her, so as to collect it there - otherwise, what'd be the point? Unless they really wanted to get her into trouble...

If there's any real proof that it wasn't hers, it'll come out in court. I just hope that if she's not guilty they find her not guilty. Irrespective of the impact on tourism, foreigners who break the law shouldn't be treated differently.

Otherwise, the thing I'm most shocked at is her getting pregnant in an apparently all female jail! They claim they don't know how it happened!

Granted, however it has to be taken in a account that nowhere in the world is the Dealth penalty acceptable.

Yes it is ignorant not to be aware and cautious of events like this, which all travelers should be fully aware of. But we have make sure not to be precious about such a foreign country in regards to the death penalty.

i would rather take the bullet than spend 20yrs in a laos prison what some other sites rekon she will get. i couldn't handle that.

must be male guards in there

Yeah, I was pretty uncomfortable to hear this story. Someone could have easily planted them on her, merely being in her bag isnt' what we call "proof" in this country!

I wonder if loas is particularly bad, or vietnam, cambodia are the same? I've even heard about some really nasty jails in thailand.

Im still not sure on were the drugs were found. Obviously if your travelling u take extra careful of your bags i always double padlock evrything in and out of airports especially.

I am in touch with quite a few people who are in jail in the "Bangkok Hilton" and i have been to visit on numerous times whilst travelling, im also going to visit them again in two weeks and let me tell you the stories i have heard is unbelievable!!!!

There are a number of books that have been written by men and women who have been in different jails in SE Asia and are pretty scary
Welcome to hell, damaged done, you'll never walk alone, forget you had a daughter to name a few. Any 1 travelling and wishing to smuggle drugs should read a copy of these as it will make you think twice!!!!!!!

Matteo2000 it isnt just laos all SE Asia jails are the same, they dont need proof once found with drugs over there u either die by firing squad or rott away in jail.

This case dosent look good for this girl!!!!

Has anyone ever been approached to smuggle drugs? Is it just a common annoyance you learn to ignore?

Doubt I could cope with being slung in jail over here let alone in SE Asia, am too pretty for it.

Rachybaby how come you're in contact with people in jail?

It might not be acceptable to you, or many other people, but it is acceptable in countries like Laos, and we have no right to judge their method of punishment. It's a bit icky thinking that if they kill her, they'll kill her child too. I reckon if she does get the death sentence, they'll wait til she gives birth first.

according to what i read, she hasnt had any antenatal care and i would assume that when she goes into labour, she will be pretty much on her own, so i wouldnt worry about the firing squad, she has to get through the labour first!

and i think the death penaly is right for certain crimes and where there is no doubt as to whether the person did it or not.

Its awful, you can only hope that if she is innocent she is set free.
Not that I condone the death penalty (for certain cases) but dem be the laws of the land.

This is one thing that make me nervous about travelling. I would obviously never choose to smuggle drugs but if something was planted in my bags, it must be the worst thing in the world.

My mother has seen the story and, of course, has not missed a beat and said how she doesnt know why I want to go travelling to be planted with drugs and end up in prison if I am lucky (or catch Swine Flu and die). It doesnt help that the unfortunate lady is also black.
