 Choice of Boat

PostPosted: Tue Jul 7, 2009 1:44 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi,

I will be travelling to Laos from Thailand along the Meking river.

Please could anyone tell me if there is a choice of slow boats on offer? I wouldn't mind paying slightly more for comfort and room. And if so how much does it cost?

Thanks

Ben

There's not really a choice, you just get on the one that's leaving at the time you arrive. Comfort depends on how many people get on, how much stuff they have, how comfortable the boat is fitted (normally just wooden seats with maybe a cushion) and where abouts you manage to sit. Generally it starts out feeling very crowded but then people spread out, find a bit of baggage, the floor, a step, the roof etc etc to sit on and before you know it the Beerlao is flowing and everyone is chilled out. With great views, friendly fellow travellers, cool breezes and a bit more room than on a bus to move around, you will soon find it quite a pleasant way to travel and certainly not the worst experience I had in Asia. Can't remember the price but it is cheap, cheaper than the speedboat, safer than the speedboat and the only other option (other than flying).

Get up early and buy a couple of cushions in Chiang Khong. There's loads of shops on the main drag through town.

They sometimes send 2 boats down the river in the morning, depending on demand. It's a lottery - some have benches, others are completely open plan. The benches can be cramped, so pray for an open plan one. Either way, as someone else has already said, head for the back and bag a spot on the floor and you'll be fine.
