What anti malarials have people been taking? I have heard that Chloroquin is becoming ineffective in Laos. The alternative - Malaro (sp) 0 is very expensive. Any advice?

I was told by the travel nurse that the only ones which are still reliable in Laos are Doxycyclone and Maralone. I have heard an awful lot of pretty nastyy side effects of doxycyclone and if I remember correctly you still have to continue taking them for 4 weeks after you leave a malaria area. I think I got 60 Malarone tablets (got them a while ago) but had to shell out about 170 quid

I dont leave for a few weeks so I can't tell you anything from personal experience only what I have read myself but I really would advise Malarone if you can justify the extra cost.

I'm sure I've seen an ad banner on this site for Malarone from Asda(of all places) that seemed cheap.

lol yeah I saw that aswell. I worked it out and it would have been a bit cheaper than I got them for but not worth the bother of going to Asda as I dont have one very close. Might be able to get em online though - I dunno.

Travel Pharm are a UK (Dorset) based pharmacist that offer very good prices over the internet. You just send them the prescription from the doctor and they send you good quality tablets. I and many others on this website have used them and been very satisfied.

Doxy can have side effects, but so can paracetamol. The only time I have met someone who has had problems with them is when they've taken them on an empty stomach. Doctors will often recommend Malarone becouse it's the 'new drug' and drugs manufacturers spend millions marketing their drugs to medical practitioners. I'm not saying that Malarone is not the best option but try to find out as much as possible and make an informed decision. Many GPs don't know that much about travel advice and will take information from a book. If you can provide an educated suggestion they will often listen to you.

Yeah I got that impresion from my nurse who read pretty much everything she told me from the info on her computer lol but I made the choice to go with malarone more from what I have read on various sites and forums online quite a few people say they have had some pretty nasty experiences with doxycyclone.
