 Cambodia, Vietnam & Loas...advice please

Hey guys

I'm planning on travelling round Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos for 5 weeks starting in Nov. I'm going on my own and was going to try to get my visas before I go to save hassle at border crossings etc.

I fly in and out of Bangkok and was wondering if you have any advice on a general route to take? I had thought about going Laos, Vietnam then Cambodia before heading back up to Bangkok for my flight home. Then someone told me people generally don't take that route?!

As I'm going on my own, I'd like to meet people along the way so don't want to do a random route.

Any other advice is more than welcome or if you're planning on doing the same route feel free to get in contact.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I have limited time to research and plan due to work and exams coming up.xx

Sounds like a good enough route - the only "hard" part will be Laos to vietnam - it can be a bit of a doozy if done overland.

Meeting people - No doubt you'll do BKK>Chang Mai & Surrounds>Luang Prabang in Laos by mekong boat>Vietiane>Hanoi>HCMC>Phnom penh in Cambodia>Siem Reap (Angkor)>Thailand. Its a pretty popular route, every destination has its traveller ghetto's and you wont be the only white face on the travel routes either, so meeting people wont be an issue.

Visa wise, you can get Laos and Cambodia at their respective borders, Vietnam do up front (I'd suggest doing in Laos at their Embassy in Vientiane).

Think your biggest thing is theres alot to see and do in the 5 weeks you have...

Hey thanks for the speedy response!

I've already done abit of Thailand 2 years ago so wouldn't mind if I didn't get a chance to travel round here too much. I've done trekking in Chang mai so thought my quickest way to Laos was an overnight train from Bangkok to Vientiane and then start travelling round Laos from there.

Again if anyone thinks this is a stupid idea let me know!xx

Hi,

I'd have a look at www.travelfish.org

it's a great website for Se Asia and has lots of example routes, trips etc

I am planning on doing that route whilst I travel round SE Asia. I am doing Thailand first but after Chang Mai my route seems pretty much the same as yours up through Laos then into Vietnam (interesting what was mentioned about crossing overland from Laos hadn't read that much about it as I planned to sort things like that out as I go along but have you got any more info Virs?) Anyway I will go from Hanoi right down to HCMC with a few stops along the way then through Cambodia and back to Bangkok. Ive got a good few stops after that but from the research I did when I first started planning a rough route it definatly sounded like a popular way to go.
