Japanese Encephalitis - Needed for Cambodia?

PostPosted: Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:38 pm Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi,

Just wondering whether this is needed for Cambodia? So far I've had my Hep A, B, Typhoid, Polio etc...but my travel route has changed since I last saw my doctor so not sure whether I now need this?

My nurse wasn't too helpful unfortunately!

How long are you there, how long are you spending in rural areas?

I'm not that clued up on cambodia, I had the jab for China though as I knew I was going to be spending significant time in rural areas in the south of the country trekking and sight seeing etc and decided for 90 quid it wasn't worth the risk

Disclaimer, I am not a qualified travel doctor

We're going to be there for about a week/10days and are planning to do Phnom Penh, Siem Reap (& Angkor Wat) and Sihanoukville ...so the main touristy routes I suppose

I just found this on the NHS website

Japanese B encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes. It is a serious infection of the brain and vaccination is advised for those in risk areas unable to avoid mosquito bites, staying for long periods (e.g. more than 4 weeks) or visiting rural areas

So i assume that we won't need it as we're only going for a short period.

I'm not a doctor, but I wouldn't be getting it for such a short time. If I was planning on working in a paddy field out there, then I would, but not on a touristy route.

For the record, my doctor doesn't recommend Jap E jab for 'tourists' going to Cambodia.

The general rule for Jap Enc in Cambodia is not to bother if you're not sticking around for long.

If you're gonna be in one place for a while, like volunteering, then get it sorted.

Is it still dead expensive?

Sounds like you've all got the right idea.

The basic principle is if you're spending 4 weeks or more in rural areas (particularly around pig farms, rice paddies and farming environments) you should consider it.

However, for most people, who stay in the cities and only venture off the beaten track for days, the vaccine itself is riskier than the disease.

Good coz I was wondering if I was taking a risk or not. I'm also going to Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, but will be staying in cities and rarely going to rural areas. After a lot of research and reading through loads of posts I decided it doesn't look to be worth it, although one nurse said I needed it the other said I didn't. hope I do have the right idea?

yeah that sounds right, you can't really rely on the nurses to be honest, best of doing your own research as they only look it up on the same NHS sites we do anyway!
