 Scam in Phnom Penh

PostPosted: Wed Aug 5, 2009 9:51 am Reply to Message Reply with quote

Hi all,

Just got back from my travels a couple of weeks ago and had a great time!
Had an odd experiance in Phnom Penh though. An Australian man approached us, he said he had his bag stolen on a coach and had lost all his money and cards. He still had his big bag and passport.

The gueshouse wouldn't let him stay without money. We recommended he get a bank transfer, he said he wanted to do this but he needed to call home to set it up, we then recommended a reverse charge call, but he said this wouldnt work.... (weird?) Surfice to say i ended up giving him $2 to make a call. He seemed suspisious, but it was such a small amount i wasn't too fussed. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Or am i just looking too much into it?

Mark

Maybe he just needed some money for a night, don't think it was a scam.

If he's a con man then he needs to rethink his approach. Seems like quite a lot of work for only $2. It would be less hassle to just rob people.

he needed money and asked you for some, you gave him some, hardly a scam is it? it's just another way of begging but rarther than sit at the side of the road and go ignored he's decided to take another approach.

those fucking cheap skate australians, it was probably a scam to make his trip last longer. $2 from 10 travellers goes a long way in cambodia!!!

This is how I'd look at this:

If he was genuine, then it only cost me $2 and I've helped someone out. Karma and all that shit.

If it was a scam, then I've lost $2, and little does he know I've infused the ink in the note with the HIV virus. So the joke's on him.

Shit man, I hope you're okay. You must have had a tough time recovering from your trauma. Scam or not, it was $2. The guy either phoned home or bought some smokes with it. Either way, it's all good karma for you.

I gave that same dude about $3, I knew it was a scam at the time but I just wanted to get rid of him cos he smelt really bad.

Worse than that, I made the stupid mistake of trying to use an ATM in Vang Vieng and it didn't give me any money (said it couldn't connect with my bank) but took $120 AUD out of my account anyway, apparently it happened to about 10 other people that day too (some who tried 3 times to withdraw money) because I only found out when I looked at my online banking.

Taught me a lesson, I just went in to the bank next time with my passport and they did it manually. People with English bank accounts got their money back a bit easier than me, Commonwealth said there is no way to prove I didn't get it. Bastards.

Fair call.

But it was quite funny.

Now you mention it though, I think this guy is quite notorious. I reckon if you Google it you might find out some more.

Tramp.
