 best way to get around?

me and my friend are planning to spend 3-4 weeks travelling north through vietnam from saigon february 2010.

i've been looking into the best way to get around and i'm having some trouble deciding what would be best. we are leaning towards travelling by train as i understand this would be the most comfortable way to go but having looked on seat61 it seems you can't get a hop on hop off ticket and instead would have to buy seperate tickets for each leg of the journey - how easy is this? does it affect the ticket price?

i have also looked into the hop on hop off buses and have read very mixed reviews on other websites! does anyone have any experience of this or advice to offer?

at the moment our tentative route is saigon - mui ne - da lat - nha trang - hoi an - hue - ha long - ninh binh - hanoi

is this too much to fit into our time? is there anywhere we've missed that is must see?
any advice is welcome!

Hiya

Feels about right in that time, Im doing something similar but from North to South from the start of Feb so we may cross half way!!

I've read the same articles on seat61 by the looks of it but I think Ill be using the trains mainly...most reviews show they are pretty clean, efficient and one of the best ways to see the country and coast line even though you do have to buy separate legs everytime you jump off!

I'll be keeping an eye on the thread to see if I can steal the advice too!!
Cheers
Dave

that's awesome are you stopping at the same places as us? we'll probably be there end of feb to mid march - we fly out of hong kong 22nd march and we have to make it overland to there!

i'm leaning towards trains too, especially the sleeper trains would be brilliant but i have read that you miss out on a lot of the scenery if you travel by night - i just don't fancy the buses much although they are loads cheaper. advice from anyone who's done the route would be really helpful!

Yer pretty much similar places, need to do a bit more reading to be fair but those are mainly the places I want to see

i guess chop and change...overnight trains are decent as you obviously save on a nights accomodation..cant t remember how long the longer legs of the journey take but just make sure you dont do them all overnight as you wont see anything!

Where do you go from HK? Home or elsewhere?
Im off to Oz from there

Yer will be off to Oz, Ill probably fly into either Melboune or GOld Coast, not sure yet. Im actually going to Oz and NZ in Nov, then ASia then back to Oz so depends how money is going whether I get time to travel or need to get some work arranged as soon as I get there!

Want to do Cape Trib and Cairns so may do that in March if I dont get time first time around in Nov...so many ifs and buts!!
