 Rift Valley

Hi
We have about 10 days spare between volunteering and starting our Absolute Africa tour. Been looking at the Rift Valley on the net and it sounds amazing. Anyone recommend where to go there or how to get there from Mombasa or Nairobi (could get to Nairobi from Mombasa by train if its easier from Nairobi).
Thanks!

Hiya sorry it's not really an answer but just seen you're going same time as me and you live near me hehe. Where abouts are you volunteering in Mombasa? Sounds like it's an organised program? xx

I'm not particularly knowledgable about this area but the rift valley is a massive area. What in particular have you seen or are you looking to do? The remains of early man are in Tanzania and can be visited from Arusha as part of a Serengeti trip. Trips to the Masai Mara can easily be arranged from Nairobi along with many other lakes and National Parks. I went for a quiet week at Lake Naivasha north of Nairobi. It has hippos, birds, friendly locals and Hells Gate National Park which is one of the few you can walk and ride in. Have you looked at a visit to Lamu Island, this is where I'd go to from Mombasa. I never made it there but I met a Scot who spent a few months there building a boat; he said it was amazing. From what I've read, the island is mainly muslim, there is only one car on the island making it amazingly tranquil and relaxed.

Like m.garratt said, the Rift Valley is pretty big. It runs from northern Kenya all the way down to South Africa!

I would also recommend Hell's Gate and Lamu, though the latter is a bit touristy now (thank you very much Lonely Planet). Lake Naivasha is expensive for what it is; there are other, similar soda lakes nearby that you can see for free.
