Are USD wildly accepted everywhere, doing an overland tour which is all in USD but will I need a few Kenyan Shillings just for taxis etc or will taxi drivers accept USD?

Hiya,

I'm going to doing an overland tour starting in Nairobi too in two weeks time and was looking this up.It seems in kenya you would probably need a supply of Kenyan shillings but taxis, buses, food etc but it would probably make sense to wait until you arrive to change your USD into Kenyan shillings.

Out of curiosity, what overland tour are you doing and with which company..??

Id take shillings as your main currency and USD for back up, most things can be paid for with USD but alot of the time you will be charged more (as with anywhere else) and generally wont recieve any change (or change in shillings so you get a mix of currency anyway).

Also check if you can use your bank card there my nationwide card wouldnt work in kenya and for some strange reason neither would my barclay card although that is one of the big banks out there.

I would take Shillings with you and then take money out along the way. Don't bother with travellers cheques - they're difficult to change.

They won't usually accept USD, and if they do you'll just end up paying more.

To withdraw money I found that the Standard Chartered bank is always the most reliable. However, like MissAnthropist says, Barclays is also very common in Kenya.
