Hi,
I've just come back from a few weeks touring Mexico with Bamba Busses and had a fabulous time. A month is a nice amount of time to be doing things in.
Places I recommend you go to are; Oaxaca (wa-hak-ka). A reasonable sized city with some great architectural/cultural sites and amazing food! I recommend going up to Mount Alban, it has great views over the city, tours are very easy to come by. I stayed in Hostel Paulina, a friendly place to meet people very clean, comfortable and central. They also set up a makeshift bar every night in the courtyard... ymm margaritas for a pound! Across the street from he hostel is a restaurant/cafe called Alex's (i think) there menu of the day is always very tasty and fantastic value.
San Cristobal de Las Casas is also a lovely colonial city, smaller and quainter than Qaxaca, with a really good market. You can pick up lots of textiles including an gen-u-ine poncho! make sure you check out a bar called Revolutions. a small venue with live music every night.
Puerto Escondido is good is you wanna chill by a beach, enjoy or want to take surfing lessons. I stayed at the Tower bridge Hostel. The owner and manager have had far to many recreational drugs in their time, but they do care about their guests. its a great place to meet people, good for a laugh or a night (or two) out! the beer flows like water! The beach is all Puerto Escondido has too offer really but after a long hot day out there its soooo good to go and flop in a cold pool at the hostel beer in hand!
And you can't go to mexico without visiting Cancun (or maybe you can) not at all anything to do with Mexico, the American have taken over! every thing is sold in $ as well as pesso! But if you want the glorious swimming beaches the warm Caribbean waters then head out of Cancan to an island 20 mins of the coast. Isla Majures and the Poc na Hostel. It has all the good sides of Cancun without too much of the commercial s**t. I felt very safe on this quitter (but by no means dead) island. Scooters and golf carts are the transportation of choice, very relaxing.
There are of course the archlogical sites, I did Palenque and Chichen Itza. excellent. I also heard good this about Tulum.
You'll have a great time whatever you do, the locals are very friendly. its easy to get around the night busses are great, taxis inexpensive. if you want any other advice just ask.
Enjoy! |
