 How to do South America?

I'm planning a RTW trip which at present is going to be something like London-Tokyo-Bangkok-overland-Singapore-Perth-Cairns-overland Sydney-Christchurch-Auckland-Santiago-......)and want to travel through South America. I will arrive in Santiago and want to see Lima and the Inca Trail, Rio and if possible Buenos Aires. I have yet to look fully into the routes I can take. Please can someone give me some advice about possible routes overland and where to end up so i can come home. These are questions I will ask the travel agent guys but I wanted lots of advice. Cheers

There are loads of buses in South America so you won't have a problem getting places. It just takes a bit of time! If you have spare cash but no time, a flight from Peru to Argentina would probably make the journey easier.

Ideally you want to end up in Rio, especially if you are planning on getting a one world ticket as then you can fly direct back to London.

Any chance you could fly into Lima ?
Then head south west in a straight'ish line:
Cusco, Lake Titicaca, into Bolivia, La Paz, Salar de Uyuni, Potosi, Sucre, Santa Cruz, then TRAIN to Puerto Suarez, (Brazil Border)
and train again into the Brazil interior.
Stop at Bonito in Brazil if you can.

Oops - I meant to say South East in the post above.
