Hi everyone,

Im flying into Santiago on the 10th of July to spend a month travelling up to Peru and finishing with the Inca Trail which i have booked for mid August. This will be the last leg of my RTW world trip of 7 months!

Basicaly i havnt even begun to scratch the surface about the things i should do, how im going to get around etc. If anyone had some good iteneraries, routes, any advice or even some good websites with advice i would be very grateful. I will also be travelling alone so anyone who might be around the same time let me know! I am currently finishing off the east coast of Oz.

thanks for reading!

I wasn't that taken with Chile. I spent a couple of days down South in Pucon which was okay and got to climb a volcano. Not much going on in Santiago. Head north to San Pedro de Atacama where you can do trips out to the desert and salt lakes.

From there take a 3 day tour to Uyuni in Bolivia - you will see some of the most stunning scenery anywhere on the planet - red lakes, green lakes, salt flats. Amazing. In Bolivia you could also go to Potosi and visit the mines, or Sucre and see an old colonial style town. La Paz is good for a few days. If you have time and the weather is with you, you can get out to the jungle in Rurenabaque.

From La Paz catch a bus to Lake Titicaca. On the Bolivian side stay in Copacabana and take a trip out to the Isla Del Sol for trekking. Then cross the border to Puno in Peru and take a trip out to the Islas Flotantes (the reed islands). From Puno you can catch a bus to Cusco for your Inca Trail. If you have time in Peru, other places in the South you may want to consider visiting are Arequipa and Nazca for a flight over the mysterious lines.

Any questions, ask away.

Hannah,
Did you go through Argentina at all? I'm looking at overlanding and there are two main routes, one spends more time going through Chile that Argentina and I can't decided which I'd prefer!

Max,
Hope you had an amazing time! Let me know of any hints or tips you may have for South America.
Ta muchly! x

The route I tend to recommend around South America is on this thread:

I did go to Argentina. My South America trip started in Rio from where I went South and crossed the border with Argentina at Iguassu. Some well recommended places in Argentina are Iguassu, Salta, Buenos Aires (from here you can also pop across to Uruguay for a day or longer) and Bariloche which was one of my favourite places. I've also only heard good things about going South into Patagonia in both Argentina and Chile although I did not make it there.

If I could only go to one of Argentina or Chile I would pick Argentina - I think there's more to do and of a better variety. Having said that whilst in Chile I went to Easter Island which was brilliant. Guess it depends what you are after. What are your route options?
