inca trail - which tour company?

helloo,

me and my friend are starting a RTW trip in january ending up in peru in july. we definitely want to do the inca trail trek and want to get it booked ASAP as i hear june/july is a popular time to do it and it's one less thing to think about once it's paid for!

we're having trouble deciding on what company to do it with though so any personal recommendations would be great. we know we want to do it, we know what to expect, basics routes/itinerary/conditions etc. we just don't know what company to go with.

obviously the cheaper the better but we wouldn't mind paying slightly more for a better company that treats its porters well. we would also prefer to go with a south american company.

two of the companies we've looked at in detail are peru treks and llama path, does anyone have any experience with these? if you've done the inca trail i'd love to hear who you went with.

thanks! sarah xx

hi warrick!

thanks for that, i did have a read of that before i posted there's some really useful info in there

i really just wanted to get some recommendations of companies that people have been with - good experiences and bad - so we can decide which company to book with. any recommendations? there's so many out there it's difficult to narrow it down so anyone's personal experience would be great

like you said in your guide we will be going with a group tour, unfortunately the budget won't stretch to a private tour!

thanks x

Ok, well first things first, be aware that June/July are popular times, and the temperature can drop well below freezing at night during these months. It's also worth knowing that Inti Raymi (Sun Festival) happens at the end of June, so if you're going to be there around then, you'll need to book well in advance, both for the trail, and for accomm in Cusco.

Regarding recommendations, your best bet is to have a look at This Site, which lists all of the travel agents in Cusco. then it's just a case of Googling a few, reading reviews, and balancing that against price.

Be aware that just because a company is listed on that site, doesn't mean they are a good company, you'll have to do your homework.

If you're after a bigger company (like a national company), then I've heard good things about Explorandes, BUT I don't know how competitive they are on price. It will probably be cheaper if you organise it yourself.

thanks for that! i didn't know that about the sun festival, is it a massive thing/worth checking out or best to avoid?

thanks for the link i will have a look at that site. i've spent hours now googling different companies so i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with information! i did look at explorandes but there's quite expensive and i would probably prefer to go with a local company.

Hmmmm. It's one of those things that some people would consider a real honour to be a part of, and others would see it as a little bit naff.
It's basically a big theatrical performance, done in traditional dress, and tells the story of the Inca's sun worship. I'd probably say that if you're there anyway, then it's worth going, but I'm not sure if I'd make the trip solely to see the festival.

Yeah, Explorandes are good for people who like the 'security' of a large, national company with lots of offices. But obviously you pay for those services.

I get asked that so much... and I can't remember which company I used.

I know it was a local Cusco company, and that they catered mainly for serious hikers and people who were into doing something a bit more strenuous (I jogged the trail when I did it).

Even if I could remember, there's no guarantee that the compnay would still be good. Times change, and I did it three years ago, so you'll do better to find a company based on more recent reviews.
