I can't help you out on the quito front but from my experience if you travelling alone then i always think its good to stay in dorms because you can meet more people that way. Not all dorms have lockers, but saying that i haven't been to peru yet so couldn't tell you what the norm is out there.

Crossroads is a great hostel in Quito. You tend to get a pretty good mix of long and short term backpackers, so there's always something going on.

A lot of people are fans of the Magic Bean, too. It's just across the road from Crossroads, but it lost my vote as it's not full of lesbians as the name suggests.

Travel agents are your best bet for booking 'trips', although most places are accessible under your own steam.

There's a bar called Reina Victoria, which is well worth a visit. It's a typical British pub, and it's generally the place to find other travellers, and it's always worth befriending the bar staff, who obviously know the area pretty well.

No. But you will need one for the inca trail. Just buy one in Cusco though, not worth dragging it around the rest of the continent though.

I stayed at Centro del Mundo. Good laidback party hostel, very easy to meet people due to the 12 litres of free rum and coke 3 nights a week. Bit of a dodfy area though, but then is the whole of the marascal.

Secret Garden is good too, but twice the price and apparently very rule and regimented.
