The two places I've stayed are Sakura hostel in Asakusa and hotel new koyo near ueno. Sakura has a good location, there's lots to do in the area and the rooms are good. Downsides, the communal lounge isn't so big and also it's not such a big nightlife area. If you want to go out a lot something in the shinjuku/shibuya area might be better.

Id recommend the annex hostel as you can get the capsule type beds and its cheap, its in Asakusa in a good location but i suppose nothing is central in tokyo as its so bloody big!

Hi guys anyone got any tips/advice on going to Japan? I am considering doing an intrepid tour but they are so expensive maybe i can just use the Lonley Planet to get by for half the price? Also I am alittle aprehensive about saftey. Im sure it's safe i mean I have been to India and that was rough as. But i read about Lucie Blackmann the other day and it scared me. Anyone read about what happened to her. I am going to Jap with my BF and a friend so i wont be doing what she was but still, scary stuff.

I wouldnt worry about safety in Japan, i dont think i've ever felt so safe in my life as i did there

do it all yourself, get a rail pass, pick the places you wanna go to and see it yourself, if you ever get stuck i'm sure there'll be plenty of people willing to help!

I recommend couchsurfing, that's what I have set up for Tokyo.

I have not had a problem with it, and lots of people seem to have no problem with it either. If you look at the stats on the home page and you look for a person with good references then you can make up your own mind.

I already have my couchsurfing ready for Tokyo but it's not until Oct/Nov time, but I can let you know how it went then.

I'm the 'British lawyer' they refer to, I'm in the picture at the bottom. It is from a newspaper in Malaysia.
