 Epic decisions...

Long story short, a chance to go traveling for up to two years has come up.

In the current hysteria of the economic slump have a reasonable job (love/hate thing) and a lot saved (for god knows what), no commitments of house/kids and debt free. A position I don't see happening again post 30.

Thinking, Japan for 6-12 months, then Krabi in Thailand for some climbing, maybe NZ and volunteering in Venezuela, before heading to LA and road-tripping across to NY in something dirty and convertible.

I've done Tokyo before for a week, which was epic, so intend to start there first. But if you have been any of these places know any tips/help/suggestions to give me a bit of confidence and momentum and get it booked would be awesome; I'm finding the whole concept terror inducing and I'm almost paralysed by all the random questions and have never really traveled (for long) on my own.

Any suggestions on anywhere else I should go?

Muchos gracias

Wow... first of all... go for it 100% It will be the BEST thing you have ever done.. and I don't think you'll be on you're own..there are many friends out there you just haven't met yet! 2 years is an amazing amount of time.. so depending on your budget you could see sooooo much. (I'm currently in Aus, and plan to do 6 more countries in 3 months on the way home!)

I would see more of SE Asia if I had the chance like you do.. I love the place, Singapore, Cameroon Highlands in Malaysia were beautiful.. and parinthian Islands, Malaysia.. Thailand I'd def say Phi Phi and Chaing Mai... I've not been to South America back packing but I think its really worth looking into..I'm thinking about doing a voluntary project in Equador in 2010.. If you have fallen in love with Japan, then its cool to spend 6-months there.. but maybe go to some other places such as China as well?? Obviously up to you but I'd go to as many places as possible with that time.

I'm sure it ill be amazing!

I plan to do Japan/China/Taiwan/Laos/Vietnam/Cambodia from Sept before going back to UK and I'm doing a lot of it solo - I do have worries..but I guess just research as much as possible in regards to safety etc, and rely on all the great people you'll meet to give you a helping hand Any tips about Japan would be great, first stop is Tokyo after Cairns ;)

Thanks for the support guys. I'm researching daily, and getting new ideas to make things a bit more interesting. I have a friend in Fukoka so prob head to Okinawa via there.

As for Tokyo, depends what you are into; when I went was nearly two years ago. Ghibli museum was fun, Harajuku was nuts, and the Tsukiji fish market is just mind blowing.

One thing I saved for next time was a jaunt out to mount fuji for the sunrise. Something you only do once they say (the climb is killer). Osaka or Kyoto for the day was something else recommended, but just no time!

Breakfast was an issue. Not much open before 10. Best place I found was in Shibuya, a small cafe hidden away at the top of the record store by the famous crossing. Does a nice minced fresh tuna and poached egg salad.

If I think of anything else useful Ill let you know!

Ja ne
