Cheaper/Better to go by Train or Bus? I assume Train will be a whole lot quicket but i'm more interested in saving money!!

where can I book, or should I just wait until I arrive in Tokyo before arranging my transport between them?

Try looking here

any other companies you will probably have to book over the phone in Japanese.
The train is about 13,000yen.

Bus is soooo much cheaper.

Its 4000 yen ish and is a 10hr journey.

123bus.net and JR rail actually run buses. In tokyo this should be easy to find out more. The railway (JR rail) buses are nowhere near as good as the 123bus.net ones and the railway ones are more expensive.

There are plenty of buses running this route so i wouldnt book until you get there.

Bus is obviously cheaper but you can't go to Japan and not try the Shinkansen. Get a JR pass, it's worth the money.

the shinkansen is just a fast train, i dont get the fun in it. Im almost sure that you dont get to go on them with the pass( i may be wrong though) i thought you had to go on slower ones.

I got a kansai region rail pass which meant i could do day trips from Kyoto, it cost 40 quid and for the time i was there it was great. However, if you go to hiroshima or up to sapporo, then its worth its weight in gold. I even met guys who had one for three of them and they threw it to each other after the went through. The japanese where to scared/shy to say anything.

You can even use out of dates ones as alot of the people who check it dont read roman alphabets so just wave you through.

Thanks for the info

I'm only in Japan 9 days & was considering a rail pass, but I don't have the time to really make it worthwhile & see enough places as I intend to spend 4/5 days in Tokyo too, so just a return 2 kyoto will have to make do!

It's the fastest train in the world and totally different to any other train service which makes it worth experiencing. You are also correct about being wrong about getting on with the pass.

If you buy a green JR pass you can use "superior " class on the trains and it's worth the money. The ordinary pass is about £180 for unlimited travel which is well worth the money when you are traveling at 300km/hr allowing you to see a lot of the country in 7days.

Have a look here for prices: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en003.html

its actually not the fastest train in the world. France have faster ones! haha

I remember trying to use my kansai region on a shinkansen but wasnt allowed so maybe thats why.

The pass actually used to be alot cheaper and they didnt change the price for a while, even when the pound was dropping. Eventually they did and the price almost doubled.

I think if your on a budget and dont need the rail pass then the shinkansen can be missed. Unless your a trainspotter. Id rather spend a few thousand yen on fugu or a sumo tournament. A single trip on a shinkansen is shitloads isnt it? But the bus is only 4000yen. Obviously its up to you!

Basically
Get the rail pass if:
you are moving between cities a lot
you also plan on doing lots of day trips
you aren't really on a budget
you like trains
you hate sleeping on buses

get the bus if:
you're on a budget
you're just going to Tokyo and Kyoto (+ surrounding area e.g. osaka and nara)
you don't mind sleeping on a bus to save money

it might be worth paying for one of the slightly more expensive buses though, you'll definately sleep a lot better.

couldnt be more right.

I will say that the 123bus.net buses were sooo much nicer than the JR rail ones and they were cheaper than the JR ones. The Jr ones were just normal buses and the other ones were nice VIP types.

"The highest recorded speed of a maglev train is 581 km/h (361 mph), achieved in Japan in 2003, 6 km/h faster than the conventional TGV speed record." You're making quite a habit of getting things wrong.

Anyway, if you ain't doing a lot of travel then get the bus as the rail pass is only worth it if you are covering big distances. Personally I would spend the extra cash on the pass but each to their own.

hi, for a month do you rekon u can see alot on the rail pass?

i really dont know what to do, we are on a budget but can allow for the pass if it really is the best option, but obviously dont want to waste money.

So we are planning on going down to kyoto and nara and hiroshima etc and we have a month so will travel for 3 weeks then stay in tokyo for a week.

123bus.net does look good and im not bothered about overnight buses at all done loads before. so it looks like a good option but the JR pass looks likea good idea for convenience and its so quick?

just need some advice really so if anyone has stayed a month in japan and would suggest either to use the buses to get around osaka, toyko, hiroshima, maybe nagasaki and kyoto areas please can u help/advise on what would be best, cheers
