in Japan its so clearly marked out for things it shouldnt be to hard, but meeting people may be hard. Buisness men and students usually speak enough english to get by when talking to foreigners.

China isnt so clear but there is usually someone who can help, but in my experience China was the hardest for language barrier. i learnt abit of mandarin but they stared at me blankly mostly. If you stay in hostels then the people who work there will help you with anything. If they know enough english.

You will manage!

How long are you going for?

The language barrier in Japan in more evident than in most other Asian countries but you can still get by. Trains have English signs and all of the lines are colour coded so it's pretty easy to get around.

Also, most restaurants have plastic meals in their window that you can use to pick what you want.

Young people generally speak some English but many are too shy to try incase they get it wrong. If you learn a few words in Japanese it will be appreciated by the locals and they will go out their way to help you.

Can't help much with China although I guess it will depend where you plan on going. I know people that travelled there found it really hard and often had to write down place names etc... for taxi drivers as they couldn't understand them at all.
